  1. UNIT 5: WATER SUPPLY, FIXED FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS, AND SALVAGE

  2. OBJECTIVES The students will: • Identify the principles of water supply and tactics for establishing water supplies using municipal sources, static sources, and portable sources. • Identify the principles and tactics to achieve salvage. • Explain the correct procedures and select the appropriate size hoselines for attaching to a fire department connection.

  3. OBJECTIVES (cont'd) • Describe the procedures for deployment of a hoseline from a standpipe system. • Using the command sequence cycle, develop a water supply action plan based on the incident presented.  • Using the command sequence cycle, develop a salvage action plan based on the incident presented.

  4. DEFINITION OF WATER SUPPLY The tactical operation of providing sufficient water to meet needed fire flows at fire incidents.

  5. PRINCIPLE OF WATER SUPPLY Develop water supply adequate to support all fireground operations.

  6. Pump Gravity Source Water Tower City Pump MUNICIPAL WATER SUPPLY

  7. MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEMS • Know quantity of water available. • Flow is determined at low demand times.

  8. Water Distribution DEAD END MAINS LOOP SYSTEM

  9. MUNICIPAL WATER SYSTEM Select size and number of supply lines

  10. 600 ft. 10 psi Residual 65 psi Hose Size 2-1/2" 3" 3-1/2" 4" 5" gpm flowing 210 330 520 670 1,250 Source: Fire Stream Management Handbook, p. 16. FLOW WITH INCREASED HOSE DIAMETER

  11. STATIC WATER SYSTEMS • Preplan to locate sources • Use relay pumping

  12. 700 feet 2-1/2"Hose 1,200 feet 5"Hose RELAYING WATER

  13. PORTABLE WATER SOURCES • Tanker/Tender effectiveness • Tanker/Tender delivery rate

  14. TANKER/TENDER DELIVERY CYCLE The time it takes a tanker/tender to set up, dump the water, travel to the fill site, fill up, and return to the dump site.

  15. 2500 Gallons 20 Minutes 2,500 Gallon Tanker/Tender TDR = 125 Gallons Minute = 20 Minutes To Dump, Travel, Fill, Travel Back TANKER/TENDER DELIVERY RATE

  16. SETTING UP FILL AND DUMP SITES • Locate for best access • Avoid backing up • Assign water supply officer

  17. WATER SUPPLY COORDINATION • Find out required fire flow from Incident Commander (IC). • Coordinate with end users to assure adequate supply for all tactics.

  18. WATER SUPPLY PLAN Command Sequence # 7

  19. REVIEW SIZEUP REPORT OF FIREGROUND CONDITIONS

  20. SIZEUP REPORT OF FIREGROUND CONDITIONS • Initial report To be given immediately upon arrival on location • Exact location and conditions as observed • – Nothing showing • – Size of structure--stories and dimensions--type of construction--occupied or vacant • – Smoke/Fire--location and density • – Status of occupants--if known • – Exposures--Sides A, B, C, D, or other • – Engine __ is establishing ___ Street Command.

  21. SIZEUP REPORT OF FIREGROUND CONDITIONS (cont'd) • Subsequent report Information not immediately reported and/or information developed upon investigation. To be given ASAP or within 5 minutes. • Progress report To be given by the IC every 10 minutes until fire is under control.

  34. WATER SUPPLY ACTION PLAN

  35. WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED?INCIDENT OBJECTIVES Contain and control fire to room/ building of origin.

  36. WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE?INCIDENT STRATEGY(IES) • Exposure protection • Confinement/Extinguishment • Ventilation • Salvage

  37. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO DO IT?INCIDENT TACTICS • Exposure protection – Deploy large diameter hoseline support for water supply – Deploy one 1-3/4-inch hoseline to Side A third floor for exposure protection • Confinement/Extinguishment – Deploy one 2-1/2-inch hoseline to Side A second floor for confinement/extinguishment – Deploy one 1-3/4-inch hoseline to second floor Side A for backup hoseline support • Ventilation – Vent roof apertures of fire building – Horizontal ventilation all floors • Salvage – Deploy salvage covers to protect contents – Limit water application where possible

  38. IMPLEMENT THE WATER SUPPLY ACTION PLAN Communicate assignments clearly to all resources operating on the incident

  39. EVALUATE THE WATER SUPPLY ACTION PLAN • Evaluate progress every 10 minutes. • Obtain feedback reports from resources operating on the incident.
