  1. Calling On The Name Of The Lord

  2. Rom. 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

  3. What does it mean to call on the Lord’s name? Some say it literally means: “To call out to God and ask for salvation”

  4. To say, “Lord come into my heart and save me” The statement itself does not tell how

  5. Rom. 10:13 This statement has a universal application In includes Jews, Gentiles, and all races There is no separate plan of salvation for different races, countries, political standings etc.

  6. Acts 10:34-35 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

  7. Rom. 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

  8. Heb. 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

  9. I. The calling is not prayer Ps. 66:18 “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me”

  10. Mt. 7:21-23 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name?

  11. and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

  12. II. It is explained in Rom. 10:13-17 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

  13. [15] And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

  14. [16] But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaiassaith, Lord, who hath believed our report? [17] So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

  15. Call – believe – hear – preaching Reverse the order Preaching – hear – believe – call

  16. Rom. 10:13,16 “Calling on the name of the Lord” and “obeying the gospel” mean the same thing – they are interchangeable

  17. III. It is explained in Acts 2:22-36 Apostles preached – the audience heard the message – many believed – they asked how to call (what they must do in order to be saved)

  18. Acts 2:21 “And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

  19. Peter’s sermon in Acts 2 Death and resurrection of Christ David’s prediction of the Messiah’s resurrection The apostles were witnesses of Christ’s resurrection

  20. Jesus being exalted to the throne of God Peter told the Jews – You killed the Christ, but God raised Him from the dead!

  21. Acts 2:23-24 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:

  22. Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.

  23. Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

  24. Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

  25. What did Peter command them to do?

  26. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

  27. Calling on the name of the Lord (v. 21) to be saved demanded and required repentance and baptism in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins

  28. Acts 2:41 Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls

  29. Acts 2:47 Praising God, and having favour with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily such as should be saved.

  30. IV. Saul of Tarsus Saul was convinced that Jesus of Nazareth was the Messiah He fasted and prayed for 3 days But he remained unsaved until he obeyed the gospel

  31. Acts 9:6 And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

  32. Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

  33. The statement simply means to obey the gospel Acts 6:7 “And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith”

  34. Mk. 16:15-16 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

  35. Lk. 6:46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
