What are functional skills? • Practical skills in English, maths and ICT that help people get the most out of work, education and everyday life, such as: • Writing a successful job application, or making a presentation – helping you to get your point across when it matters most. • Using the internet to access local services or online banking. • Recognising good value deals when making purchases. • Functional skills qualifications are available at various levels. • Entry levels 1, 2, 3, Level 1 and Level 2

Key Skills of old. • Functional Skills and Key Skills differ significantly in the assessment methods used. • Key Skills use a combination of multiple choice tests and the development of a portfolio for assessment. • Functional Skills are tested through an assessment only; there is no portfolio. The assessments are open ended questions structured to show the processes a learner goes through to find a resolution to a task. These process skills are integrated into every assessment.

Why functional skills? • Leitch review of skills • UK needs “95% of adults to havefunctional literacy and numeracy by 2020” • CBI 3Rs report • Employers demand for functional skills in applicants • 2009 CBI Education and skills survey • 40% of employers are concerned about the basic literacy and numeracy skills of workforce • 57% concerned with basic IT skills

Functional skills within Apprenticeships • Key skills have been replaced within all apprenticeship frameworks from Sept’ 2010 • All apprenticeship will include functional skills in English and mathematics, most will also include ICT • Functional skills will be at the level of the framework, or one level below.

  6. Maths • “Fundamental to individuals being able to use mathematics effectively in life and work is their ability to understand and make sense of Mathematical information, to use and process that information, to interpret and analyse the results of their activity and to present this to others. These process skills form the basis of the Functional Skills standards to Mathematics and apply at all levels”. • This consists of a 1 hour and 30 minutes exam .

  7. English • Functional Skills in English aim to encourage learners to demonstrate their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in a range of contexts and for various purposes. They are essentially concerned with developing and recognising the ability of learners to apply and transfer skills in ways that are appropriate to their situation. • Functional Skills in English are assessed in Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.

  8. ICT • “For ICT to be useful, learners must have the skills and confidence to apply, combine and adapt their ICT knowledge to new situations in their life and work. They need the capacity to identify and understand the role that ICT plays in the world and use ICT in ways that enable them to function as effective citizens and benefit them in life and work”. • This is in the form of a paper based assessment to be completed using print screens on a computer.

  9. What is distance learning? BKSB • Initial assessment are carried out to see assess current levels of English, mathsand ICT. Diagnostics then highlight weaknesses within that area of learning. • The diagnostic software generates individual learning material that is designed to guide you in the areas of weakness. • These sessions can be completed from any location which has internet access. They are marked instantly for feedback and also visible by the tutor to indicate competency.

  10. The weekly/fortnightly sessions • Workshops • ILP to complete in week 1 • Work to be assessed and checked • Work to be completed both in session and offsite in preparation for the exam.

  11. Exams process • Two mock exams need to be completed before being able to be submitted for the real assessment. The pass mark is generally 60 – 70%. • Exams are available online or paper based and are completed in an exam setting. • You will need photographic ID to be able to sit the exam.
