  2. AQA Functional Skills • Quality assured – rigorous procedures for production of high quality papers (QPEC) • Task = ensures depth • Test = ensures breadth • Currently assessment available in January and June

  3. Assessing Functional English • 3 Units - can be taken in any order • Assessment January and June from 2008 • Unit 1 Reading • Unit 2 Writing • Unit 3 Speaking and Listening: (internal assessment)

  4. Assessing Functional English Unit 1: Reading • Multiple choice • Level 1 (45 minutes) 12 questions • Level 2 (1 hour) 36 questions On screen testing trialled from June 08 onwards

  5. Assessing Functional English Unit 2: Writing Constructed answer • Level 1: 45 Minutes - 10 marks • Level 2: 1 hour – 15 marks

  6. Assessing Functional English Unit 3: Speaking and Listening • Level 1: Discussion • Level 2: Discussion and Presentation • Assessment now available in British Sign Language

  7. Assessing Functional English • Exceptional Award: Level 1 Exceptional award available for Level 2 entered candidates • Hurdle within a hurdle: Level 2 in all 3 units required to obtain Level 2 overall

  8. Assessing Functional ICT • 2 Units - can be taken in any order • Assessment January and June from 2008 • Unit 1: TEST comprising several question types • Unit 2: externally set TASK, completed on-screen under controlled conditions in the centre.

  9. Assessing Functional ICT Unit 1: The TEST: Question types include: • Multiple choice • Sentence completion • Matching pairs • Ordering • Searching • Underlining

  10. Assessing Functional ICT • Unit 2: The Task • Externally set task • Completed on screen under controlled conditions in the centre • Candidates need sole use of a computer • Must be able to print out the outcome

  11. Assessing Functional ICT • Unitised Model • Unit 1 and 2 in same session or separate session • No hurdle within a hurdle

  12. Assessing Functional Maths • 1 Unit • Assessment January and June from 2008 • Unit Levels • Level 1 – 1 component: Section A Functionality TASKS & Section B Competency TEST • Level 2 – 2 components: 2 papers taken at different times, but both in the same series.

  13. Assessing Functional Maths Level 1: 1 component • Written paper – Functionality test (calculator) & Competency test (non calculator + pre-release materials)

  14. Assessing Functional Maths Level 2: 2 Written papers • Written paper – Competency test (non calculator + pre-release materials) • Written paper – Functionality test (calculator)

On-screen, at a PC, Assessment • Term ‘on-screen’ means taken at a desktop PC not ‘on-line’ • Will be on offer from summer 2008 • English: Reading available as an option –there will be no on-screen version of the writing test for the foreseeable future. • ICT: Unit 2 is assessed on-screen from January 2008 onwards. Unit 1 will be trialled on-line for a few pilot centres in January 2009. • Mathematics: The level 2 Competency test available as an option from June 2008. There are no plans currently for an on-screen version of the functionality tasks.
