Intro to Movie Making • “You can’t do it unless you can imagine it.”- George Lucas • Movie set designer is where you get to work on the scenery and make a movie • What got me interested in movie making was going to the Transformers set in Detroit • I will be researching the conditions and the schooling needed to be able to work on set and what they are responsible for.

  3. Nature of Work • 5 responsibilities of working on set 1. Movie set designer has the job of talking with director 2. Designers have to guide key staff from other departments 3.Responsible for overall look of movie or T.V. series 4. Acts as a consultant to director, camera and special effects 5. Has to coordinate work with costume designer, production designer, and director

  4. Working Conditions • Movie set designers are working physically and mentally • Work outdoors and indoors • Flexible hours, depends on the movie • Depends on the movie • Could be a home made set or out in the forest

  5. TQA • A bachelor's degree in fine arts is needed • Plan on going to Academy of Fine Arts or New York Film Academy • In high school I will take Computer Aided Design, Television and Digital Media and Intro to Drama to prepare

  6. Job Outlook • Employment rate is increased by 10% this year • Fairly competitive • Career openings in L.A., which is most popular for film making, New York, and now Michigan which is becoming popular • Would want to work in Michigan

  7. Earnings • Lifestyle goals are living in a nice house, a family, and a working car • Average earnings are $26.93 a hour and $59,890 a year in 2013 • It does fit my goals • With my earnings my 1st purchase would be a house

  8. Movie Editor • Responsibilities 1. Fit pieces of film together 2. Insert music, dialogue, and sound effects 3. Meets with director to understand his vision for the film • Working conditions can be inside or outside • Employment rate is not expected to rise beyond current level for the next decade • There are currently 31,600 editors in the U.S. and 750 job openings each year • Yearly earnings $54,490 • It would be awesome to work in film editing and see how everything comes together over time

  9. Summary • I feel like I would love doing this every day. Making movies into something cool and being apart of it would be awesome. • I am looking forward to working on set and making different settings look real. What I look forward to the least is working in the really hot weather. • I learned that there is a lot of stuff that I need to do to become experienced and things I need to do to be qualified for set designer.
