  1. What is a Set Designer? The set designer is typically brought in to a production by the director at a very early stage. The challenge is to find a visual language for the director’s vision of a play, and to cope with the sometimes complex logistics of staging. The next step will be a set of reference materials and a sketch book. The designer will sketch out all the scenes to see how they’ll flow and will then build a model of each scene. The models are photographed to produce a storyboard with an image showing the staging for each scene. That becomes the bible for the craft workers who will build the sets and staging. All this happens a long time before the rehearsal process starts and involves frequent meetings with the director, the lighting designer, production manager and the costume designer. Once rehearsals begin there may well be further changes. The job isn’t over until the opening night.
