More than 1/3 of Residency Programs in the NRMP • accepted at least one resident outside the match • One in every seven residents, almost 4,000, found their positions outside • the match • Certain states had the largest concentrations that took candidates outside • of the match including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York • A final survey conducted one year ago by the NRMP found among the • other interesting comments that over half the program directors said they “had offered positions outside of the match to be competitive.” Internal • Medicine, Pathology and Psychiatry were the highest number of • positions outside the match; roughly 30% each
