GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS • Grade 10 Courses: English, Math, P.E.,Planning, Science, Social Studies • Grade 11 Courses: English, Science, Math, Social Studies • Grade 12 Courses: English, 3 Grade 12 courses & Graduation Transitions • Other Requirements: at least one course from Fine Arts or Applied Skills in grades 10, 11, or 12 • MINIMUM # OF CREDITS REQUIRED IS 80 (=19 courses + G.T.)

  3. Graduation Transitions Starting in the September 1, 2007 school year, Graduation Transitions replaces the Graduation Portfolio Assessment. • Personal Health - maintain a personal health plan and participate in at least 80 hours of moderate to vigorous physical activity, in addition to PE 10. • Community Connections - participate in at least 30 hours of work experience and/or community service and describe what was learned. • Career and Life - complete a transition plan and present significant accomplishments.

  4. WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? • Some people have a clear plan for September 2008. • Many others are undecided about what they are going to do; however it is important to start examining the options. • You want to be in charge of the decision, not have the decision in charge of you!

  5. WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS? • University full time • College full time (diploma, certificate, university transfer, associate degrees) • Trade/technical school full time • School part time and work part time • Travel • Work full time • Government programs • Others????

  6. POST SECONDARY APPLICATION PROCESS • BC Universities, Colleges, Technical Schools apply through www.pas.bc.ca • Ontario Universities www.ouac.on.ca • Other institutions, access directly online

  7. College/Trade School Requirements • High school graduation. • Some programs have specific prerequisite courses that are required. (Check online or viewbooks.) • Can do upgrade courses at college if necessary. • Apply early – October / November! • May be waiting lists for some programs. • No waiting lists for general registration.

  8. University Requirements • Must have a Language 11. • Must have English 12 • Must have minimum of 3 additional provincially examinable courses. • Provincial exams are NOTan option if you want to go to university • Some faculties have specific course requirements eg. Science. • Important to check specific requirements NOW!!!!!

Comparisons COLLEGES/TRADES • Apply early. • Registration date is based on whenapplication is received in most cases. • Back up plan for university bound students. • Variety of programs. • Nov. 1 Kwantlen applications UNIVERSITIES • Early application deadline is usually the end of February. • Admission is based on GPA for English 12 and 3 provincially examinable courses. • Some faculties use specific courses eg. Science. Don’t forget, apply to Kwantlen on Nov 1

AMERICAN COLLEGES/UNIVERSITIES • Students interested in applying to American post secondary institutions should start the process in gr. 10 and 11. • Students must write a SAT test. • Registration can be done online at collegeboard.com • Info in Counselling Centre • Athletic and academic scholarships are available.

PROVINCIAL EXAMS • Everyone writes at least one provincial exam. • Exams are written at the end of January and the end of June. • Results are available onlineapproximately 4 weeks after exams are completed. • $1000 scholarships are available if you score a minimum of a B in English 12 and 86% on your best three provincial exams. • Rereads and rewrites are available; see your counsellor for information.

LPI? • PEN # Personal Education Number • How you are identified at the Ministry. • Available from your counsellor or on your report card. • Necessary for applications & to access your marks. • TVR Transcript Verification Record • Shows graduation information school sends to the ministry. Available in DECEMBER & MARCH. • LPI Language Proficiency Index • Required English test for many post secondary institutions • Students with 86% (or 80% for UBC) in English 12 are exempt • April 3, 2008 at EMS; other locations & dates

  14. PSI? TRANSCRIPTS? PSI Post Secondary Institute Choices Form • Signing this form in MARCH allows the universities and colleges to electronically access your marks. Transcripts are requested through the office. • Will be necessary for some scholarship applications and some post secondary institutions. • Applications to American schools will require grade 9 – 12 marks.

  15. SELF REPORTING MARKS • BC universities (SFU, UBC and UVIC) ask students to self report grades • When? March / April • In some cases students may have to predict second semester marks • Information is submitted online • Marks are verified in early May when universities get the electronic transfer from the Ministry of Education

ONLINE!!! • Prepare student profile sheet + Resume (on your computer) • Letters of reference • EMS Scholarship Information Booklet • Attend the Scholarship Evening: Oct. 25th

  27. May • Earl Marriott Scholarship applications due • Ministry of Education electronically transfers mark to post secondary institutions in B.C. and Ontario

  28. May / June • Will start to get conditional acceptance letters from universities

Managing Stress • Prioritize your time • Be realistic • Keep balance in your life -academics, extracurricular, social, work • Practise stress reduction techniques -exercise, meditation, journaling, etc. • Balance outside work with school -More that 15 hours a week can be detrimental to studies
