  1. South Dakota Health Education Standards • New National Health Education Standards were adopted in 2007 • SD used the National Standards as a model for the SDHES • SD DOE adopted the SDHES in 2010

  2. SD HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS • The new standards incorporate the five old standards and also include three new. • Added Decision Making Skills, Goal Setting Skills and Analyzing Influences IE: Family, Peers, Media, Technology • The 8 standards broadly and collectively articulate what students should know and do to adopt or maintain health enhancing behaviors.

  3. SD HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS • The new standards incorporate health/wellness concepts with the concept of 21st Century Skills • 21st Century Skills as defined by business leaders include: Critical thinking, problem solving, communication, leadership and technology literacy • These skills blend nicely with Meade School Districts mission “To build knowledge and skills for success today and tomorrow.”

  4. SDHES IMPLEMENTATION AND USE • Currently health concepts are taught in both physical education and regular classrooms. • PE/Health Department will review the new standards and use them to update the district Health Education Curriculum Guide. • The updated guide will outline what will be taught at each grade level, what standards are addressed and a recommendation of what subject areas the standards can be taught. • A cross curricular approach in teaching health concepts will allow for overlap of the standards taught and hopefully diminish any gap in instruction that may exist.

  5. SDHES ADOPTION • It is important to review and/or revise standards and curriculum in a timely manner in order to keep current with what is best for our students. The SDHES were derived from the National Standards and modified by a committee of SD educators and health professionals to ensure that the standards represent what the students of SD need to engage in a healthy lifestyle. • Based on this knowledge the Meade School District Health/PE Department and it’s members recommend the adoption of the new SDHES.
