  1. A Few Basic Reminders About Delivering Your Speech…. So you don’t look like a (total ) moron

  2. Look the Part! Half the battle of being a good speaker is looking confident and professional

  3. Fair enough…. But HOW???

  4. Dress Simply and Appropriately You’re going for this: Not this:

  5. Stand Up Straight! • Don’t slouch • Don’t lean on the podium • Don’t cross your legs or your arms • Don’t shift your weight • Don’t stick out a hip, leg, foot, or any other part of your anatomy

  6. Demonstrate Facial Expression This means work your eyes , your brows, and your mouth. You have facial muscles… so use them!

  7. …so you don’t look like this:

  8. Don’t Forget to Gesture!

  9. And Don’t Forget Eye Contact! But be careful! Look around too much, and you look strung out. Look too long, and you look just plain creepy.

  10. Animate Your Vocal Expression Listening to a monotone speaker is the worst So keep varying your pitch, but be careful not to sound sing-songy or lilting

  11. Enunciate Clearly • No mumbling • Keep your rate consistent—not too fast or too slow • Avoid a heavy accent You don’t want to sound “Gumpish”!

  12. Know Your Speech! • Use note cards or an outline • Don’t “read” your speech • Don’t memorize your speech • Don’t forget your speech

  13. And Remember…. It’s (usually) not as bad as you think!

  14. Thanks to Sonya Davis for this wonderful power point.
