Cupid • Lineage: son of Aphrodite, husband of Psyche, father to Hedone • Symbol: handsome youth or winged baby, blindfolded- “love is blind” • Powers: uses arrows to kindle love or create aversion to a lover • Weaknesses: easily used, pride, moody • Description: “Eros” or “Love”, beautiful youth, gives good gifts to men, looks sweet but is really mischievous/naughty or even worse • Important events: marriage to the mortal Psyche, who gets turned immortal • Allusions: Romeo and Juliet, Santa Clause movies- council of legendary figures

Psyche • Lineage: mortal parents (father-king), two sisters, wife of Cupid, mother of Hedone • Symbol: butterfly winged goddess • Powers: divine understanding of mortals • Weaknesses: trust, curiosity • Description: “Soul”, very beautiful- made even Aphrodite envious • Important events: becomes immortal by Zeus to be able to marry Cupid without angering Aphrodite • Allusions: “Ulalume” by Edgar Allan Poe- soul

Aphrodite • Lineage: daughter of Zeus + Dione (Iliad) or sprung from foam of sea (later), mother of Cupid, wife of Hephaestus (Odyssey+ most stories) • Symbol: tree- myrtle //bird- dove, sparrow, or swan • Powers: deadly/destructive power over men • Weaknesses: envious of other women’s beauty (ie: Psyche) • Description: goddess of love & beauty, irresistible, can be soft/weak but also treacherous/malicious • Important events: because of her jealousy, Psyche eventually is turned into an immortal to appease her envy • Allusions: The Odyssey- Hermione, Dove soap, Venus shaving products

The Graces • Aglaia (Splendor), Euphrosyne (Mirth), & Thalia (Good Cheer) • Lineage: daughters of Zeus and Eurynome, Aglaia is wife to Hephaestus only in one story- otherwise none married • Symbol: rose, myrtle, dice • Powers: enchanting dances, entertained with songs sang with the Muses • Weaknesses: vindictive • Description: not separate- always together, triple grace & beauty, “give life its bloom”, “queens of song” with the Muses • Important events: Hera offers marriage to one of the Graces in exchange for Hypnos’ help in tricking Zeus • Allusions: The Iliad- beauty of Euphorbus’ hair, The Odyssey- Athena giving beauty to Penelope

Hephaestus • Lineage: sometimes said to be son of Zeus + Hera, sometimes of Hera alone, wife- Aglaia of the Graces (Iliad) or Aphrodite (Odyssey) • Symbol: blacksmithing, volcanoes • Powers: armorer & smith of the immortals • Weaknesses: lightweight drinker, small, two broken legs, vindictive • Description: ugly/lame, kindly & peace-loving, popular on earth and heaven, important in life of city with Athena- patrons of handicrafts, protector of the smith, god of ceremony • Important events: revenge on Hera • Allusions: Vulcan (Roman name from Star Trek)
