  4. Latin America and Mexico • Class Warfare • Peninsulares vs. Creoles • Creoles study in Europe and return with Enlightenment ideas • Napoleon’s conquest of Spain brings unrest and opportunity to the Spanish colonies

  5. South America Goes Revolting! You may call me “El Guapo!” • Libertadores! • Napoleon’s takeover of Spain allows the colonies a chance to govern themselves • Spanish Colonies want to continue this when Napoleon is defeated • Spain’s King is not willing to compromise on this issue Simon Bolivar

Who Wants to be Free? • Greece wins its freedom from the Ottoman Empire  • Belgium wins independence from the Netherlands  • Italians work to unite the peninsula from Austrians & the Pope  • Poland rebels against Russia  • Hungary tries to break free of Austria  • Bohemia (Czech Republic) tries to break free of Austria  • Many of the revolutions were unsuccessful initially • However, places like Italy and Germany would unite by the end of the century

  11. How Long does this Last? • By the end of the 19th Century things begin to take a more modern shape • Many of the revolting countries begin to stabilize • The world then moves into a different kind of revolution
