Home Safety Council Research According to The State of Home Safety in America™ – the largest and most comprehensive study of injuries at home: • Home-related injuries result in nearly 21 million medical visits and almost 20,000 deaths annually • Each year, preventable injuries are the fifth leading cause of death overall • Each year, preventable injuries specifically in the home: • Are 2.5 times more likely to cause injury than car crashes • Cost our nation up to $380 billion

  7. New Off-the-Job Safety Research

New Home Safety Research • The Home Safety Council conducted a survey of corporate safety officers to identify the common challenges faced in running or launching off-the-job safety programs. • The results will help the Home Safety Council target corporate safety officers with the tools and resources they need to implement off-the-job safety programs.

Off-the-Job Safety Challenges • Key challenges to running or launching an off-the-job safety program include: • Lack of program ideas for events or training (46 percent) • Lack of fresh, new materials (51 percent) • Lack of networking or best practice sharing among peers (68 percent) • Lack of budget to support an off-the-job home safety program (73 percent)

Desires for Online Tools • Survey results also revealed a desire for online tools that integrate both on-the-job & off-the-job safety programs • Online tools allow for a broader reach • Safety officers can give employees online materials they can share with their families at home, engaging in a “Train the Trainer” approach • Safety officers can also use online materials to easily reach employees in different locations A A A A A A

Comprehensive Safety Programs • Large companies especially are looking for programs that integrate on-the-job and off-the-job safety programs • Looking to leverage existing on-the-job safety programs and materials to extend to off-the-job safety programming • “Big corporations do a great job on wellness or on-the-job safety, but stumble on how to take those messages home”

New Resource – Scald Burn Prevention Booklet • Step-by-step guide to help families protect against scald and burn dangers. • This "flip book style" resource includes instructional photographs and checklists, in English and in Spanish. • Walks caregivers through the actions they can take to prevent scald burn injuries at home.

  24. Hands on Home Safety Materials • HSC offers many tools and resources (in English and Spanish) to help you promote home safety and disaster preparedness.
