More than 137,000 young adults in more than 5500 clubs in 137 countries call themselves “Leos.” Leos volunteer to help others in their communities. This “adventure in service” often leads to personal growth, new social contacts, and leadership skills.

  8. Leo Clubs • Let’s preview your future as a “star” in your local Leo club. • Leos are often the “main attractions” in their communities. • The “cast and crew” of the more than 5,500 Leo clubs in 137 countries are “center stage” in the development of community service projects.

  9. Leo Clubs • When Leos serve their communities, their “4-star” award-winning contributions are noticed. • Their popularity soars. • Leos have fun while developing essential leadership skills.

Leo Clubs • How did this Leo adventure begin? 1957 • Coach Jim Graver, baseball coach for Abington High School in Pennsylvania, was an active member of the Abington Lions Club. • Coach Graver saw a need for a boys service group, and with the help of some fellow Lions, the first Leo Club was chartered on December 5, 1957.

  12. Leo Clubs • As the world’s first Leo Club, they created the acronym Leo Leadership Experience Opportunity Maroon & Gold are chosen as the official Leo colors!!

  13. Leo Clubs By 1967 • More clubs were chartered and Lions International adopted the Leo Club Program as an official program of the association. • Now open to both males and females, the objective of the Leo Club Program was, and still is:

  15. Leo Clubs • Today the Leo Club Program is stronger than ever. • Community service remains the cornerstone of the program. • Like their Lion counterparts, Leo Club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching positive results unfold.

Leos often participate in the Lions international youth camp and international youth exchange programs. • Leo Clubs also participate in the Leo Club Twinning Program, where they are “twinned” with another Leo Club, of a different country.

  24. Volunteerism Around the Globe • Canada:Youth aged 15-19 had the highest volunteer rate of all other age groups – 37%. • United States: Volunteerism at an all time high among Generation Y, a generation 60 million strong.

  25. Volunteerism Around the Globe Taiwan:80% of youth indicated they are interested in volunteering. Australia: The strongest growth in volunteerism is among people under 25 and also among 55-64 year olds. We could go on and on as all countries are indicating that their youth want to be heard and wish to contribute to their community, country, & world needs.

  26. Leo Clubs • What kind of projects do Leo Clubs do? • Environmental Action is the official International Service Project for Leo Clubs, which addresses issues of land air, and water pollution.

  27. Leo Clubs • Some suggested projects include: • Creating a community compost heap • Planting tree seedlings • Helping at a recycling facility • Implementing a beach clean-up campaign • Volunteering at a wildlife shelter

  28. Leo Clubs • What are other Leo Clubs doing? • In Iowa, the West Liberty Leos organized a used book drive for a local hospital and collected over 1600 books! • In Austria, the Wien Opera Leos organized a drive for a homeless shelter, collecting clothing and personal hygiene items.

Leo Clubs • The Tunis Espoir Leos in Tunisia, donated a wheelchair to a physically disabled child, which enabled the child to attend school. • The Selkirk Leos in Ontario donated funds to two local humane shelters. • Your club ideas are yours!!! • The needs are plenty!
