Hot Topics for 2010-2011 • Academic Council Curriculum Framework • Best practices to assist committees in developing curriculum that is transferable • Some guidelines One or two prefixes per discipline Use a 3-letter prefix (new prefixes approved by system office) Use only 3 number course designations Determine a “percentage of commonality.” If any course contains at least 75% of the same learning outcomes, they are the same course. Colleges have the opportunity to contextualize developed courses to meet local needs. All existing courses will be reviewed by curriculum committees for renumbering. If a technical course and a general education course are the same, the general education course “wins.” Using curriculum revision for the purpose of addressing workload issues is prohibited!

Hot Topics for 2010-2011 • BOR Policy 4.12 • Policy on Collaborative Program Development • The KCTCS President (or designee) is charged with developing curricula frameworks which shall include (but not be limited to) the consistent use of prefixes, common course numbering, and the elimination of unnecessary duplication • AS Degrees – 60 hours • AA Degrees – 60 hours • AFA Degrees 61 – 64 hours • AAS Degrees – 60 – 68 hours • Diplomas – 36 – 60 hours • Certificates – 12 – 36 hours

Hot Topics for 2010-2011 • HB160 • Beginning with first-time students entering a public college or university in the 2012-2013 academic year, no bachelor of arts or bachelor of science degree program requirement shall exceed one hundred and twenty (120) credit hours and no associate of arts or associate of science degree program requirement shall exceed sixty (60) credit hours. The Council on Postsecondary Education may approve exceptions to the requirements of this subsection for specialized programs that comply with specific program standards established by external accreditation bodies or for other reasons deemed necessary by the council.

Curriculum Approval Process • There are slightly different processes for: • Adding, revising, or deleting a course • Adding or deleting a course from the General Education List • Adding a course currently being offered at a state university to the college’s catalog • Adding a course being offered at a state university to a college’s General Education list (esp. if the course has no existing competencies) • Revising deleting options of a credential • Creating a new program • Creating new credentials to an existing program • Adding options or credentials that exist in the system catalog to a program currently being offered at a college • Offering a course through a distance education format • X 2 for pilot proposals!
