    2. What is a cyclone? It is a term used for hurricanes in the Indian ocean and the western pacific. The name Gonu was contributed by the Maldives, meaning 'bag made from palm leaves' in Dhivehi, the Maldivian language.

    4. Tropical Cyclone Gonu At the beginning Gonu was listed as a Category Five cyclone, the highest level. India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgraded it to Super Cyclonic Storm Gonu. Gonu had intensified to a powerful super cyclonic storm with maximum sustained winds near 260 km/hr on the 5th of June 2007. Heading northwest through the Indian ocean toward the Arabian peninsular. It is considered the strongest cyclone to hit the region since record keeping started in 1945.

    5. It was weakened after it encountered drier air and cooler water temperatures before it made landfall. The cyclone made landfall in Oman on the 6th of June 2007 with maximum sustained winds near 148 km/hr It was reduced to Category 2. But It was still strong and powerful. Tropical cyclones as strong as Gonu are rare in the Arabian Sea.

    6. Damages: Tropical Cyclone Gonu affected more than 20,000 people. It was responsible for 49 fatalities and 27 missing people in Oman. It brought heavy rainfall which caused floods and landslides. Overall damages in Oman were estimated to be over 4 billion U.S. dollars. in Iran 5 fatalities were reported and 9 people remain missing. Gas prices went up in the whole world.
