  2. What is Money? • Money is a very important item in our world today. Almost everything we do involves money, from every day life, to sports and schooling. • Since we handle money so often, it is very important that we know how to count, add, and subtract it.

  3. Types of Money • Dollars • $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, $100, $1000 • Coins • Fifty-cent pieces • Quarters • Dimes • Nickels • Pennies

  4. Dollar Bills • The $1, $5, and $10 are the most common bills used today. • There are also $2, $20, $50, $100, and $1000 bills.

  5. Dollar Descriptions • $1 contains a picture of George Washington, our 1st President, on the front and the national symbol on the back. • $5 contains a picture of Abraham Lincoln on the front and the Lincoln Memorial on the back. • $10 contains a picture of Alexander Hamilton on the front and the White House on the back.   6. What Coins Stand For • Fifty-cent piece = 50 cents or $.50 • Quarter = 25 cents or $.25 • Dime = 10 cents or $.10 • Nickel = 5 cents or $.05 • Penny = 1 cent or $.01

  7. Some Possible Money Combinations • 1 quarter = 2 dimes and 1 nickel • 1 quarter = 1 dime and 3 nickels • 1 quarter = 25 pennies • 1 dime = 2 nickels • 1 dime = 1 nickel and 5 pennies • 1 dime = 10 pennies • 1 nickel = 5 pennies Printable Play Money

  8. Some Sample Problems • What is 2 quarters, 1 dime, and 1 penny? • How many dimes are in $.50? • What is 1 dollar, 5 dimes, and 2 nickels? • How many quarters are in $1.00

  9. Answers • $.61 or 61 cents • Five • $1.60 or 1 dollar and 60 cents • Four

  10. Making Change • Making change is a very important concept to learn. When you buy something you need to know how much it is and how much you have, to see if you have enough. • To learn the concept of money, you are basically subtracting the cost of something from what you have to spend. • The basic way to learn how to subtract money is to start with a dollar and simply subtract the number of cents from 100. Making Change Problems • If you bought a candy bar for $.55 and paid with a $1 bill, how much money would you get back? • There are three things you want from the store, one is $.25, another is $.54, and the last one is $.30. If you have a $1.00 bill, is that enough to get all three? • If you have $2, how much will you have left over if you buy something for $1.75?

  12. Answers • $.45 or 45 cents. • No, your total is $1.09 and you only have a $1.00. • $.25 or 25 cents.

  13. Money in Different Countries • Money is also known as currency. • The type of currency differs from country to country. • The U.S. uses the type of money we have been talking about. • Canada has it’s own monetary system and its money is worth less than ours. • Pesos, Deutsch Marks, Yens, and Euros are just a few of the other types of currency.
