  1. Book Jacket Project Instructions and examples

  2. What is a book jacket project? • A book jacket project is a summary of a good book that you have read for the month. • The book jacket will resemble a jacket that is on most books… but with your own creativity added to design the cover! • Your book jacket just might inspire another student to read that book. 

  3. When will I make a book jacket? • The book jacket will be due at the end of every month. • Students will present their book underneath the document camera. • Excellent book jackets will be displayed in the classroom or on the 5th grade bulletin board.

  4. Let’s look at some awesome examples!

  5. Step 1 • On the cover: You must have” • Title of Book • Author’s name • Create your own original eye-catching illustration/art work that reflects an important part of the book. This picture should reflect the main problem in the story along with having the main character included. YOU ARE TO USE COLORED PENCILS • It must be done neatly, as if you were going to publish the book for someone to purchase • It must be your own handiwork – not electronic. Be creative, show me your BEST! • Do NOT use pencil in the final project – you may for the initial drawing and writing, but not for the final project you will turn in. • Any awards the book has won. (Ex. Newberry, King) • Don’t forget your name as the Cover Designer/Illustrator!

  6. Step 2 • On Inside Left Flap: You must write a full paragraph describing your favorite scene or event. • On the Spine: You must write • Book Title • Author of the Book • Publisher • On Inside Right Flap: You will fill out a compare and contrast graphic organizer, comparing yourself to a character in the book. You must use at least 3 complete sentences in the comparison and the two contrasting sides.

  7. Step 3 • On the Back Cover: You must write • A one paragraph summary of the book • DO NOT reveal the ending • Try to hook readers into wanting to read this book • Publisher and Bar Code • Create your own original eye-catching illustration/art work that reflects an important part of the book. This picture should reflect the main problem in the story along with having the main character included. YOU ARE TO USE COLORED PENCILS • It must be done neatly, as if you were going to publish the book for someone to purchase (check spelling!) • It must be your own handiwork – not electronic. Be creative, show me your BEST!
