  2. 2007 Strategic Plan Mission:TheICO works with ophthalmologic societies and others to enhance ophthalmic education and improve access to the highest quality eye care in order to preserve and restore vision for the people of the world. Emphasis:Elevating the level of eye care worldwide particularly in developing countries

  3. 2007 Strategic Plan Expansion of Focus: • To really improve access to eye care worldwide, enhancing residency education and educational programs not enough • We must advocate for increased support for eye care and build greater capacity • We should work with and through other ophthalmologic organizations and educational institutions • Helping those organizations develop effective leadership and organizations will be critical to their (and our) success

ICO Leadership Development • Intent not to duplicate Leadership Development Program of AAO, PAAO, SOE, et. al. • World Ophthalmology Roundtable on Leadership Development (WORLD) initiated early in 2007 • WORLD Principles: • Inclusive(of all ophthalmology leaders) • Advisory (to the ICO) • Participatory, interactive and connecting • High touch and high tech (online WORLD to come) • Ongoing (not time limited) • Evolving

  5. WORLD Purpose: To bring leaders of ophthalmologic societies and educational institutions together to exchange information and ideas that will help them develop effective organizations and programs to enhance ophthalmic education and access to eye care.

WORLD First WORLD Meeting: February 25, 2007, Lahore, Pakistan: • With Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) • 36 participants from 15 countries • Assessed needs of societies and leaders and how ICO might help Second WORLD Meeting, March 28 and 31, 2007, in Dubai: • With Middle East Africa Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO) • 21 ophthalmologists from 11 countries • Formed the ICO/MEACO Advisory Leadership Group for Sub-Saharan Africa (now 40 ophthalmologists from 18 countries) Third WORLD Meeting, June 27, 2008, WOC, Hong Kong • Education • Advocacy • Leadership and Organizational Development

  11. 2008 ICO Organizational Model • Conducted research on what makes organizations effective now: diverse, collaborative, decentralized leadership, etc. • Defined an organizational model in which the ICO would: • Continue to develop programs (Assessments, Fellowships) to support education and improve eye care • Act as a facilitator, leader, innovator, convener, stimulator and supporter of interested ophthalmologic societies and related organizations To Build a World Alliance for Sight

ICO 2009: Refocusing Ophthalmic Education • World Ophthalmic Education Colloquium (WOEC) in Hong Kong, June 28, 2008 • ICO President Bruce Spivey Keynote:"Direction and Development of Ophthalmic Education in the Coming Decade.” • February 2009 Proposal on Refocusing Ophthalmic Education: The main thrust would be to continue the education of ophthalmic educators, including the ICO leadership, about modern educational methods for adults and to lead a process of rethinking and redefining how we teach ophthalmologists and others to provide eye care.

ICO 2009: Refocusing Ophthalmic Education The desired outcome is the development of more effective teaching programs and materials, resulting in enhanced ophthalmic education and, ultimately, improved eye care around the world. An important secondary outcome would the development of better teachers and leaders of ophthalmologic societies and educational institutions, ideally leading to stronger organizations working together to enhance teaching and increase access to quality eye care.
