Who is Mrs. Parziale? • Has two terrific children and a wonderful husband • Resides in Morris County • Graduate of North Hunterdon Regional High School • BA Mathematics from FDU • Teaching Certification from Kean University • Avid Chess player • Believes teaching is an exciting adventure that involves both students and teachers in exploring new concepts, sharing ideas, and applying knowledge to the world around them.

Expectations • What you can expect from me as your teacher – • To treat you with respect and care as an individual • To provide you an orderly classroom environment • To provide the necessary guidelines and procedures to be successful • To provide the appropriate motivation • To teach you the required content

  8. Expectations • What I expect from you as my student – • To treat me with respect and care as an individual • To attend classes regularly • To be cooperative and follow all procedures and guidelines • To come prepared with course materials each day • To study and learn the required content

  9. Guidelines • Be in your assigned seat and working on the Do Now when the tardy bell rings. • Bring ALL books and materials to class and take them with you when you leave. You will not be able to go back to your locker. • Follow directions the first time they are given. • Treat each person in this room with respect and dignity. • Follow all procedures and policies as outlined in the North Hunterdon High School handbooks.

  10. Following the Guidelines Will result in - • Verbal Acknowledgement • A stress free learning environment • A pleasant and orderly classroom atmosphere

  11. Not following the Guidelines Will result in - • 1st – Warning and documentation • 2nd – Parental Contact and Action Plan • 3rd – A 30 minute after school detention with me and Disciplinary Referral

Materials For Class • Required: • Covered Textbook - Paper cover or book sox • A separate three-ring binder for Math only (1-inch for class, 3-inch for storing notes at home) • Notebook dividers (Notes, Handouts, Homework, Course documents) • Notebook filler paper • Three sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils • Pen for correcting • TI83-Plus or TI84-Plus Calculator (you may purchase one on your own or borrow one from school) • Recommended: • Handheld pencil sharpener (if you use wood pencils) • Colored Pencils (for diagrams in notes or homework) • Highlighter pen • Graph paper 4 Dry-erase markers and an old sock (eraser)

Notebook requirements • Your notebook should be: • An accurate record of what you are doing in class • 3-ring binder is preferred • Divider tabs may be used to organize your notebook by chapter • The following items are to be included in your notebook: • Algebra Syllabus-Course Requirements Sheet • Homework Syllabus (should be the first page or in the front pocket) • Class notes (dated, legible, examples, and steps) • Homework (dated, with page and problem #s) • All worksheets and handouts • All tests and quizzes • Notebook quizzes • Absence does not excuse you from the class notes or homework. Be certain to get the notes missed from someone reliable.

Procedures • Make-up Assignments or Assessments • Upon returning to class after an absence, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed • Please check with another student to determine what handouts you missed • Copies of handouts may be obtained from the teacher • You will have one day for each day you were absent to make-up any assignments • You will have one week from the day you return to make-up a test or quiz. • Any work not completed in the timeframe noted will receive a zero • Work missed due to a cut may not be made up (this includes any type of assessment)

  15. Procedures • Attendance (refer to student handbook for further details) • You are expected to be in your seat when the class period begins • You will be marked absent anytime you are not present in class • Loss of credit will result from 12 unexcused absences

Procedures • Classroom Etiquette • There is no eating in class unless you have a medical reason • Foul language will not be tolerated • Take care of your personal business outside of the classroom (i.e. put on your make-up, brush your hair, etc. at your locker) • Electronics (cell phones, iPods, etc.) must be off and out of site.

  17. Procedures • Academic Etiquette • Cheating (as defined in the student handbook) will not be tolerated on any assignment or assessment. It will result in both parties receiving a zero on the assignment and a conference with their parents. • Be an active learner (take notes, ask questions when confused, seek extra help when needed) – “Vegetable Students” are not welcome in this classroom.

  18. Opportunities for SuccessGrading Policy • Students will earn points throughout the year. The total points earned out of the total possible points will result in a percentage grade. • Tests – usually 100 points each • Quizzes – 20 to 30 points each • Homework – • 3pts for excellent effort on homework • 2pts for good effort shown (more than half completed) • 0pts for little or no effort shown • (1 pt may be earned on completed HW turned in late) • Notebook check – up to 20 points • Projects – up to 50 points

More Procedures • Projects • Unless otherwise directed, projects are done individually • Students will be assessed using a rubric that they will have when the project is assigned • Each rubric will detail project requirements • Projects will be worth up to 50 points each • All projects will be announced well in advance.

Procedures • Class Notes • Each student is responsible for taking his/her own notes • Notes should include any terms and their definitions as well as examples of problems done in class • Notes are to be kept in student notebook and saved for later references (keep current marking period material in your daily binder and previous marking period material in a 3” binder at home) • Notes may be used on notebook quizzes • Notebook checks will be done through notebook quizzes, which will be worth up to 20 points.

Procedures • Quizzes • Unless otherwise directed, quizzes are taken individually • During notebook quizzes only, students may use their notes taken during class to assist them in answering the quiz questions • Quizzes may or may not be announced • Pencil will be used • Quizzes will be worth 20-30 points each

Procedures • Tests • Announced at least two days in advance • If you are absent the day before a test, you are expected to take the test • Individually taken • No notes may be used • Tests will each be worth about 100 points or more • Pencil will be used • All students will be given the opportunity to correct any incorrect answers on their tests using the procedures detailed for making test corrections.

Procedures • Homework – • Homework should be done in pencil within your notebook and kept • Identify assignment at the top right • If you don’t understand a problem, go back through the lesson in the text as well as your notes and try it again • If you still have trouble with the problem, check first with a fellow classmate. If you continue to be stumped, you may email me with the problem you are having trouble with and what you have tried so far. Then, see me the following morning in school to schedule some time after school to go over the problem(s). • After sitting down at the start of class, set homework on the left side of your desk to be checked

  26. Procedures • Heading a paper – top right hand corner • Unique number & Mod • Name of Student • Date • Assignment • Place heading on all assignments turned in

  27. Procedures • Textbook • Textbooks are to be covered at all times • Textbooks should be brought to class each day • You are responsible for your textbook – take care of it • Should you loose the textbook, you will be charged for a replacement

Procedures • Using Calculators • Calculators are valuable tools for students to use • Calculators will be distributed to those not having their own (it is highly recommended you purchase your own calculators as they will be used throughout your high school years) • Calculator numbers will be recorded on the Student Information Card. • You will be responsible for it (students will have to pay for a lost calculator) • Batteries are your responsibility • Calculators should be used to assist students in solving problems in Algebra • Calculators can not be used to play games

  29. Procedures • Entering the classroom • Please enter quietly • Have a seat in your assigned seat • Take out your materials (writing instrument, notebook, textbook) • Review your syllabus for the day’s lesson • Begin working on the Do Now

  30. Procedures • Class preparation • Bring all materials to class with you each day • Textbook • Notebook • Pencils (3), pens, highlighters, erasers, colored pencils • calculator • Take all materials with you when you leave the class

  31. Procedures • Class Dismissal • The teacher dismisses you, not the bell • Do not start packing up prior to the bell • Wait until the teacher finishes and officially dismisses you with -- “Have a nice day”

  32. Procedures • Using whiteboards • Use them to practice problems in class • They are not for doodling • Use only dry erase markers on the boards • Use socks or paper towels to wipe clean • When finished using, return to my travel bin at the front of the room
