  1. Week of: March 10th – March 14th News to Know Rowdy Readers Next week is Sprit Week. Each day students and staff can come to school wearing a fun outfit that goes with our theme for the day. I have attached a document to the newsletter email about each day’s themes. Next week is also STEM Week. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We will have a special STEM presentation next week and a night full of STEM activities on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00. Come on out for this really cool event. Report cards for trimester 2 go home next Friday. Please remember that I need the signed envelopes back to confirm that parents/guardians looked at and discussed the report cards with their child. If you have any video footage from the Specials Night show please contact Anjali Karia at akaria@op97.org With spring coming, I know that there are a lot of recitals, games, shows and events that your child might be a part of! I always like to show interest in my students outside of the classroom, so if you there are any upcoming events in the area, please share them with me and I will do my best to attend! • This week we were very busy during our reading activities as we continued our Dr. Seuss author study and continued our unit with weather. This week we compared similar books, wrote our opinions for different books read, identified major events and worked on blends with the letter L (e.g. fl, gl bl, sl, cl, and pl). Some of the books that we read this week to help with these skills include: • The Cat in the Hat Comes Back • Animals in Winter • Bear Snores On • Bear’s Loose Tooth • The Mitten • The Woodpecker • Russ and the Firehouse • This week we also added more sight words and vocabulary words. Remember that sight words are words that should be read easily by sight and vocabulary words are used to improve oral language skills. The new sight words were “will” and “big”. Our list is now up to 29. The new vocabulary words for the week were: clear, cozy, retreat, experience and hibernate. Math Madness Upcoming Dates This week in our math activities and games we worked a lot with estimation. When teaching estimation it is important not to tell the kids that estimating is a “guess” or “educated guess”. It is a reasonable mathematical reading of the numbers. To help with estimation this week we used estimation bags, matched estimations and created our own inferences. 3/17-3/21: SPIRIT WEEK! 3/17-3/21: STEM Week Wednesday, March 19th: STEM Night Friday, March 21st: Report cards go home 3/22-3/30: SPRING BREAK!!!
