  1. Resumes A few tips

  2. Job Analysis One way to be sure you are catering to the job ad is to do a job analysis or a professional inventory. Create a table (one is provided for you) with two columns. One will be made up of phrases directly from the job ad, the other will be how you fulfill those items.

  3. Job Analysis In addition to my studies in Rhetoric and Technical Communication, I have a Bachelor’s degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. This diversity helps me in my teaching, as I can teach not only the technical layout and design of a document, but also help the students tap into the creative side of their writing as well. Before receiving my Bachelor’s degree, I completed a liberal arts transfer degree from Spokane Community College. While there, I took part in clubs, events, and was the acquisitions manager of the school’s literary journal for a year. I have worked for different industries, in which I have had to write manuals, instructions, emails, memos, and code websites. My extensive range of experience in the field of writing and my experience with working in and being a part of a community college makes me a perfect fit for your school. By using classroom and online technology, mixed with my understanding of the community college experience, I believe that I can teach the students to use their composition skills no matter where their degree may take them. …with the community in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and global understanding The job analysis not only helps you design your resume for your audience, but it helps you write your cover letter as well. are interested in applying technology to effective teaching

  4. Audience Technical communicators spend a lot of time thinking about their audience before drafting anything. Who is the audience for your resume? Can you edit a resume to match each audience? Your resume should be focused for the advertisement you are answering, or the company you are applying to (if no ad is being answered). Remember, a resume is your way to advertise just how awesome you are. Done right, it will convey that to your potential employer.

  5. Make it easy on the eyes People who look at resumes don’t spend a lot of time on them (20 seconds tops) so make it easy to read, and designed to stick out. While this is eye-catching, it’s very hard to read. Plus, if he’s not a graphic artist of some sort, this is a very inappropriate resume.

  6. A Couple of Tips • Write a resume with substance & depth. Don't summarize, water-down, and oversimplify your job responsibilities and accomplishments.  The result is that a potential employer thinks "this person is lazy and doesn't do very much" • Proofread your resume to eliminate spelling errors, grammatical errors, and formatting inconsistencies.  A potential employer will say "a person presenting them self this poorly on paper will likely poorly represent our company." • Prioritize the information that the employer seeks and simplify or omit information of minimal interest to the employer. The most significant accomplishments and jobs need to be at the beginning of the resume, not buried further down the page.
