  2. 1. How cartographers traditionally worked • Plane-table surveying: draw map from highest point, using sighting device and visual observation • The cartographers braved difficult conditions, including bone-chilling weather, bandits, and horse thieves.

  3. 2.How technology changed map making • Photos from airplanes: draw map by copying contours of land from aerial photos. • Radar: use radio signals to create images regardless of weather.

  4. 3. Satellite Technology • Sensor imaging: use sensors to detect changes in the wavelength of light that is reflected from Earth’s surface.

  5. A false color image : The images are not true-to-life color pictures because natural colors make perceiving the different wavelengths difficult : Images are made up of colors such as reds, yellows, and purples

  6. 4. Computer Technology • GPS(Global Positioning System): Combine computer and satellite technology to locate people or places anywhere on Earth

  7. <Satellites and Computers work together> • Satellites collect and record data from Earth’s surface. Computers then convert the data to a code that is used to produce images.
