  2. The Transit Village Initiative was created in 1999 as a response to three growing problems in New Jersey.

  5. The TRANSIT VILLAGE INITIATIVE rewards towns that plan for housing, retail shops, jobs, offices, services, civic uses, etc. within walking distance of transit.

  6. The TRANSIT VILLAGE INITIATIVE is a partnership of NJDOT and 10 State of NJ Agencies: • NJ Transit • NJ Department of Community Affairs • NJ Office of Smart Growth • NJ Housing & Mortgage Finance Agency • Main Street NJ • NJ Economic Development Authority • NJ Dept. of Environmental Protection • NJ Commerce & Economic Growth Commission • NJ Arts Council • NJ Redevelopment Authority

  7. The 11 State agencies make up the TRANSIT VILLAGE INITIATIVE TASK FORCE. The TASK FORCE provides benefits and incentives to towns and cities that plan for growth within walking distance of transit.

  9. ~ There are 14 Criteria ~ The six most important things a town has to do…

  10. 1. Must have transit • Train • Bus • Ferry • Light rail

  11. 2. Opportunity for redevelopment walking distance is roughly ½ mile

  12. 3. Have the Political Will to Grow

  13. Adopted zoning based on transit-oriented development (TOD) principles. Mix of transit-supportive uses in a compact & walkable form

  14. 5. New housing within walking distance of transit

  15. 6. Strong bike & pedestrian links to transit station.

  16. What are some of the incentives and benefits?

  17. For a town that meets the key criteria, the TASK FORCE will deem them a “DESIGNATED TRANSIT VILLAGE” and work together to provide grants, loans, technical assistance or priority funding

  18. Examples of recent assistance to • Transit Villages • Planning & visioning grants (OSG & TRANSIT) • Grants for redevelopment studies (OSG) • Seminars in downtown revitalization (MAIN STREET NJ) • Assistance for business expansion (COMMERCE) • Brownfields clean up money (DEP and EDA)

  22. Over 70 municipalities in NJ have expressed interest in pursuing this type of growth around transit.

In conclusion, the TRANSIT VILLAGE INITIATIVE … • Showcases community vision and leadership. • Provides incentives for residential and mixed-use growth near transit. • Helps to increase transit ridership and reduce reliance on the automobile. • Offers an excellent development paradigm for developing and redeveloping communities.
