  3. What is a thunderstorm? • Heavy rain storms accompanied by thunder and lightning

  4. How do thunderstorms form? • Form in cumulonimbus clouds • Most form when warm air is forced upward at a cold front, others form on hot, humid afternoons in the spring or summer

  5. What is Lightning? • During a storm, areas of positive and negative electrical charges build up • Lightning is a sudden spark, or energy discharge, as these charges jump between parts of a cloud, between nearby clouds, or between the cloud and the ground

  6. What is Thunder? • Lightning heats the air to as much as 30,000 degrees Celsius! • The air expands rapidly and explodes • The sound of air exploding is thunder!

  7. What is a tornado? • A rapidly whirling, funnel shaped cloud that reaches down from a storm cloud to touch the Earth’s surface

  8. How do tornados form? • Tornados develop in low, heavy cumulonimbus clouds • Normally form in spring or early summer • Normally form late in the afternoon while the ground is warm

  9. What is a hurricane? • A tropical storm that has winds of 119 kilometers an hour or higher and is about 600 kilometers across

  10. How do hurricanes form? • A hurricane begins over warm water as a low pressure area, or tropical disturbance. • If it grows in strength it is considered a tropical storm. • If it continues growing it is considered a hurricane

  11. What fuels a hurricane? • Warm humid air! • A hurricane will slow down and die when it hits land!

  12. What is the eye of a hurricane? • The quiet area at the center of the hurricane
