  11. Types of Waves • Two main types of waves- Longitudinal and Transverse • Longitudinal Waves- Have parallel motion, waves that cause particles to move parallel to the wave motion. • Transverse-motion of the particles is perpendicular to the motion of the wave.

  12. Parts of a transverse wave • Crest-highest point of a transverse wave. • Troughs-lowest point of a transverse wave. • Amplitude- the greatest distance that particles are displaced from their normal resting positions.

  13. Parts of a Longitudinal Wave • Two parts of a Longitudinal Wave • Compression- areas where the wave is crowded together. • Rarefactions-areas where the wave is spread out.

  14. Wave Measurements • Wavelength- measures the distance of two equivalent parts of a wave. • Period-measures how long it takes for one wave to pass by. • Frequency-measures the rate of vibrations.

  15. Frequency and Period Relationship • Frequency and period are inverses of each other. • What is an inverse relationship? • Sample Problem

  16. Relationship Between Wavelength and Period • Speed=displacement/time • Wave Speed=wavelength/period • Wave Speed=frequency x wavelength • Sample Problem
