  3. B. Aesthetic - appearance • Improves appearance of homes & buildings through landscaping • Improves appearance of land from fruit, vegetable & ornamental crops grown

  4. C. Environmental – health & comfort • Cleans air • Prevents erosion • Provides shade • nutrition

  5. D. Future is for horticulture industry to grow because of increase in population & new home construction

  6. EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS Describe the broad field of horticulture & its different divisions.

  7. A. Horticulture defined: “Hortus” - Garden “Cultura” - Cultivation 1. Horticulture comes from Latin words that mean “garden cultivation” Horticulture is the cultivation, processing, & marketing of flowers, ornamental plants, & food.

  8. B. Divisions of Horticulture – fruits, vegetables, & ornamental plants 1. Floriculture – the science & practice of growing, harvesting, storing, & designing & marketing flowering plants

  9. 2. Landscape & nursery industry- the science & practice of propagation, growing, planting, maintaining & using grasses, annuals, shrubs & trees

  10. 3. Olericulture - the science & practice of growing, harvesting, storing, processing & marketing vegetables

  11. 4. Pomology - The science & practice of growing, harvesting, storing, processing, & marketing tree grown fruits Ex. Apples, pears, bananas, etc.

  12. There are 3 applied sciences.

  13. A. Biology - the branch of science that deals with both plant & animal organisms & life processes.

  14. 1. Zoology - the part of biology that deals with animals

  15. 2. Botany - the part of biology that deals with plants.

  16. B. Applied Plant Sciences Based on purpose for which the plants are grown.

  17. 1. Agronomy - The science & practice of growing field crops such as cotton, wheat, tobacco, corn, & soybeans

  18. 2. Forestry The science & practice of growing, managing, & harvesting trees for building materials & other products.

  19. 3. Horticulture The science & practice of growing, processing, & marketing fruits, vegetables, & ornamental plants.
