The Berlin Wall: Construction, Purpose, and Fall

The Berlin Wall, constructed in 1961 under Nikita Khrushchev's command, aimed to stop the exodus of skilled East Berliners to Western territories. This "brain drain" prompted the erection of a heavily fortified wall dividing East and West Berlin. While the Western side allowed limited civilian access and graffiti art flourished, the Eastern side was strictly controlled with barbed wire and armed guards. The wall stood for nearly 30 years, until its historic fall in 1989, symbolizing the end of the Cold War and the reunification of Germany under the influences of Gorbachev and Reagan.
