  1. 7 Steps To Help You Search the Web Effective Internet Searching & Website Evaluation by Lorrie Heagy

  2. Lincoln’s Tie! My Plump Starfish and… Find those hidden treasures with the help of …

  3. What does mytie and a plump starfish have to do with searching The Web, you ask? Hey Abe, I’m not Plump!

  4. The two of you help form a mnemonic, or a short phrase, that helps you remember something. Each word stands for one of the 7 Steps to Help Better Search The Web. Oh… WATCH!

  5. Quickly Plump Lowered Starfish My Lincoln’s Tie! The 7 Steps to Better Searching Mnemonic:

  6. My MINUS (-exclude) Plump PLUS (+include) Starfish STAR (wildcard*) Quickly QUOTES (“phrases in quotes”) Lowered So “Plump” stands for “Plus?” Lowercase (case matters) Lincoln’s LINKS (find pages linked) Tie! TITLE (find word in the title)

  7. Let’s use our national bird, the bald eagle, as an example. I still don’t get it.

  8. NOT a football team … Since you are searching for a bird … Plump (+plus) My (-minus) …we can eliminate football pages by placing a minus sign next to the word “football” and a plus sign next to the word “eagles.”

  9. And some use NOT instead of “-” Some search engines use AND instead of “+” Include Exclude + - AND NOT There’s no spacebetween the + or - and the word, but there is a space between the words. Example: +eagle -football no space space

  10. My MINUS (-exclude) Plump PLUS (+include) What does the “Starfish” stand for? Starfish STAR (wildcard*) Quickly Let’s review the steps we’ve learned so far from our mnemonic. Lowered Lincoln’s Tie!

  11. We should have used eagle* instead of eagles. Now, I get it! For example, in your last search you may have missed some important sites about me. STAR (wildcard*) +eagle* The * wildcard stands for any letter or letters. It helps catch variations of a word so that we don’t miss any important sites by accident.

  12. My MINUS (-exclude) Let’s get to the “Quickly Lowered Lincoln’s Tie” part of the mnemonic. Plump PLUS (+include) Starfish STAR (wildcard*) Quickly In general, never search for the plural of a word. Use the wildcard* and get both singular & plural forms. Lowered Lincoln’s Tie!

  13. Quickly QUOTES (“phrases in quotes”) “bald eagle” Instead of THIS! bald eagle “Quickly” stands for “Quotes” which makes sure your search words stay together as a phrase. Otherwise, your search might end up looking like this …

  14. Instead of ME! Lowered Lowercase (case matters) eagle ME AGAIN! In general, unless you’re searching for a proper noun, you should search using lowercase letters. Otherwise, you might get … Eagle

  15. My MINUS (-exclude) Plump PLUS (+include) Starfish STAR (wildcard*) Quickly QUOTES (“phrases in quotes”) Let’s review the steps so far! Lowered Lowercase (case matters) Lincoln’s Hey, that was my job! Well, let’s get to the last two steps: LINCOLN’S TIE! Tie!
