  1. John 17:1-5 (NIV) Jesus Prays to Be Glorified 1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:    “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.

  3. The prayer of John 17 is the greatest prayer ever prayed. • Need to approach this chapter with a spirit of humility and worship. • It is a privilege to listen in as God the Son converses with His Father.

  4. He is about to give His life as a ransom for sinners. • Jesus is seen not as a “victim” but as a “victor”. • John 16:33 – “I have overcome the world”.

  5. For Himself – for the sufferings that lay ahead. To receive new strength. (Heb.12:1-3) • For His disciples –for their security, joy, unity and glory. • For us – to know all glory (done & given) all that He will do in heaven.

  6. Jesus burden was the glory of God. • “Hallowed be thy name” – Matt.6:9 is the first petition in the Lord’s prayer. • First emphasis here. • v.1- “Father, the hour is come” – Jesus lived on a divine timetable.

  7. “Glory” – appears five times. • a. Refers to His preincarnate glory – glory laid aside when He came to earth. (17:5) • b. His life and ministry on earth glorified the Father – (17:4) • c. Wants it to be returned so that the Son will glorify the Father in heaven. (17:1,5)

  8. How did Jesus glory the Father? • a. In His miracles – John 2:11;11:40 • b. Through His sufferings and death – 12:23-25; 13:31-32 • Calvary revealed and magnified the grace and glory of God. • Because of Jesus’ finished work, we have eternal life –John 17:2-3

  9. Believers are the Father’s “love gift” to His Son – v.2,6,9,11,12,24

  10. It is God’s free to those who believe on His Son. (John 3:15-16,36) • Authority given to Son to give eternal life by the Father. • What is eternal life?

  11. Knowing God personally. Not about Him. Having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. • Not something earned by character or conduct. It is a gift. • We receive eternal life when we admit we are sinners, repent and believe on Jesus Christ alone.

  12. Because we share His life, we are over comers. • We share His victory. (1 John 5:4) • We are born again through faith in Christ. • We are born a winner. • Rev. 12:11 – Our overcoming power is through Christ finished work.

  13. John 17:6-12 (NIV) 6 “I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. 8 For I gave them the words you gave me and they accepted them. They knew with certainty that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world, but for those you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them. 11 I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of[your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled

  14. Christ has given us eternal life. (v.2) • But He also gave us the revelation of the Father’s name. (v.6) • The Old Testament Jew knew God as “Jehovah” – the great I AM Ex.3:11-14

  15. Jesus took this sacred name “I AM”. • He made it meaningful to His disciples. • “ I am the bread of life “ – 6:35; • “I am the light of the world” – 8:12 • “ I am the good shepherd” – 10:11

  16. By doing this Jesus was showing His disciples that: a. He was everything they needed. b. God – the great I AM – was their heavenly father. c. The Father had sent Him. d. He was equal to the Father. Claimed deity. e. His words and works came from the Father.

  17. By His words and deeds, Jesus revealed the nature of God. • The emphasis here is on the safety of the believers. • God keeps His own. (17:11-12) • Jesus and the Father, together with the Holy Spirit are able to guard and secure God’s people.

  18. We belong to God by creation and by covenant. • How precious are we in His sight. • He watches over us and prays for us.

  19. Even with all the failures and faults, the disciples receive words of commendation. • “I am glorified in them.” • How is this possible? • What divine resources has God provided for us?

  20. 1. We have His Word –v.7-8 • It reveals to us all that we have in Jesus Christ. • It gives us faith and assurance. • 2. We have the Son interceding for us– v.9 • The Father always answers the prayers of His Son. • This intercessory ministry helps to keep us safe and secure.

  21. 3. We have the fellowship of the church.(v.11) • There is no such thing as an isolated believer. • God’s people need each other. • Where you find saints, you find fellowship.

  22. We are secure in Christ because of: - the nature of God. - the nature of salvation. - the glory of God. - the intercessory ministry of Jesus. • Jesus keeps all whom the Father gives to Him. (10:26-30) • We are over comers because we know His Name .
