  2. Tips to make a correct question In this exercise you have to write out a question for which the underlined element in the statement can be the answer. • We visited Gabriel last April /When did we visit Gabriel? • Obama won the elections in 2008 / Who won the elections in 2008?

Instructions to avoid possible mistakes • Use the correct auxiliaries or modals • She comes to school every day / How often does she come to school? • Make the subject inversion properly. • I have been living in Ireland for a long time /Where have you been living for a long time? • If the sentence is a negative, remember to negate the auxiliary or modal. • She doesn’t smoke because it’s unhealthy. / Why doesn’t she smoke? • Be careful with collocation, especially with mid-position adverbs such as already, just or frequency adverbs. They always precede the main verb. • Marge has already finished work. / What has Marge already finished? • When the underlined element is preceded by a preposition accompanying a verb, remember to put the preposition after the verb. • I’ve been waiting for them at the corner. / Who have you been waiting for at the corner? • We are looking for answers. / What are you looking for? • When we ask about the subject, there are no auxiliaries or inversion. Those questions are always with “who” or “what” • The Russian player needs to win the match . / Who needs to win the match? • This crisis began in 2007. / What began in 2007?
