  6. Anorexia • When someone constantly refuses to eat, they have the disorder Anorexia. • Click next to learn about the four different stages.

  8. Directions • Read through the description of the four stages. Pay attention to their titles, because you will be asked to identify them later. Click here to start!

  9. Stage #1: Achievement • During this time the person is normally praised by their peers for their successful weight loss. The person is striving to meet a goal weight, and constantly needs to feel in control.

  10. Stage #2: Security-Compulsive • The person no longer has a goal weight to achieve at all. Most of their time is spent exercising. The more weight the person loses the fatter they feel. They often have little time for their family and friends.

  11. Stage #3: Assertive • Friends and family have noticed there is something wrong. The person will reject any advice, and believes everyone is jealous. They feel a sense of power over their own body.

  12. Stage #4: Pseudo-Identity • The person finally acknowledges that there is a problem, but still will not take action to stop. The end result is normally a self-centered attitude.

  27. Bulimia • When someone has Bulimia they still eat, but after their meal they proceed to make themselves throw the food back up. They believe that this is healthier than Anorexia because they are still at least eating the food. Click next to start learning about the different stages.

  29. Stage #1 • First the person tries normal diets. In the beginning they deny themselves food. They are successful at first, but then they start to have food cravings.

  30. Stage #2 • They give into their food cravings. Then they feel a sense of failure. Those feelings lead them into binging. These may be spontaneous, or planned. Some might resort to stealing food after they lose their self-control.

  31. Stage #3 • The fear of gaining weight and the guilt/shame bring a need to compensate for their excessive intake. Binging and purging become a habit. They then feel despair and may become depressed.
