  9. Course Structure • Lectures will cover concepts and principles, not detailed problem solving • Lectures assume reading assignments are done prior to lecture • 11 homework assignments • 4 quizzes • 1 final examination

Rules & Expectations • Honesty – students are expected to abide by the GSU Academic Honesty Policy (see http://www.gsu.edu/images/Downloadables/Undergrad_06-07_catalog.pdf • Attendance - veteran students enrolled in this course and receiving benefits for this semester must initial the Veterans attendance Roll each week.

Rules & Expectations • All quizzes and exams are required. • Makeup-quizzes or exams are available only for instructor-approved circumstances (i.e. Physician documented illness, official GSU travel, GSU holidays, documented jury duty, or documented personal emergency). • Late homework assignments will not be accepted.

Rules & Expectations • Tardiness & Leaving Early • Lectures –enter or exit the lecture hall as quietly as possible without asking permission or extending appologies • Quizzes or Exams - if you are late during quizzes and exams you will not be allowed to take the exam after the first person turns in the exam

Rules & Expectations • Cell phone Policy • Ringers should be set to off or vibrate only during lectures • Cell phone conversations should only occur outside the classroom or lecture hall • Cell phones should be turned off during quizzes and exams (use of cell phones or other communications devices during quizzes or exams will result in a zero score for that quiz or exam)

  15. Rules & Expectations • Questions during lecture - highly encouraged, even questions that may seem trivial may reveal fundamental misunderstandings that need clarification for success in this course. No physics related questions or comments in class will affect your grades in any way.

Secrets to Success • Read the material prior to lecture • Quizzes and exams may include questions or problems based on concepts from lectures, the textbook, and reading assignments • Take advantage of any and all study sessions offered by the physics graduate students • “Scientific” calculator will be required for homework, quizzes, and exams • One 8.5x11 inch page (front & back) with notes may be brought and used for quizzes and exams

  17. Homework • Assignments will be on WileyPLUS (web-based homework assignments) • Possibly some assignments may be “old school” handout problem sets

  18. Quizzes • 4 throughout the semester • 2 in-class • 2 take-home

  20. What is a correct answer? • Multiple choice • Correct choice • Numerical Problem • Correct numerical result AND • Correct number of significant digits AND • Correct units AND possibly • Details of equations used and math solution (show your work)
