  3. 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range The MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range cartridge uses a telescoping cartridge case to provide weapon powering while launching non-lethal payloads. A variety of candidate payloads have been demonstrated, with multiple rubber balls being the leading candidate for initial fielding.

User perspective: “In my own experiences, a MK-19 with NL Capabilities would provide tremendous overwatch and capability to push back a violent crowd as opposed to just engage a single agitator. .... If the MK-19 in the foreground had NL Munitions, they would have been able to clear the crowd and re-open the bridge behind them. ….In cities and villages, a MK-19 could be extremely helpful in the event that you have a massive crowd of non-combatants who are being exploited by agitators and violent handlers to neutralize your position or deny necessary access.” --LTC Jim Brown

  6. 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range • Preliminary performance requirements: • Minimum engagement range of 10 meters • Maximum effective range of 50 meters • Weapon cyclic rate 275 shots per minute • Other considerations: • No weapon modifications required • Trajectory compatible with weapon sights

  7. 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range Concept of Employment Firing Demonstration: Conducted at Fort Leonard Wood on 25 SEP 2002 Representatives from the various services witnessed the demonstration, including BG Curry, Commandant, US Army Military Police School; COL Lamb, Assistant Commandant; COL Karcher, Director of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate; and senior NCOs from the various services.

MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range FY04 Progress (continued) • Focused primarily on maturing the cartridge design to make it ready for production • Design improvements address reliability, producibility, corrosion resistance, waterproofness, etc. • Volumetric propellant loaders fabricated to eliminate weighing propellant charges • Crimping tooling being instrumented to monitor crimp process during cartridge assembly • Modeling and simulation effort underway to support future production and to identify potential problems

MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range Summary: • The 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Short Range cartridge concept has been successfully demonstrated • Cartridge configuration adaptable to a wide variety of payloads • Cartridge configuration is rapidly maturing into the production configuration • Type Classification Standard scheduled for FY06. • Fourth patent pending

  12. 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Long Range Description: Provides MK19 non-lethal capability with 50 to 1500 meter effective range. Uses “Davis Projectile” concept with airburst or proximity fuze to decelerate projectile at target location. Dispenses non-lethal payloads such as rubber balls. Uses conventional cartridge case and ammunition impulse to power the weapon mechanism for rapid-fire.

  14. 40mm MK19 Non-Lethal Long Range • Leverages projectile deceleration mechanism developed for the 20 and 25mm Airbursting Non-Lethal Munition • 20mm and 25mm experiments have verified projectile deceleration mechanism works for the projectile velocities of interest

MK19 Non-Lethal Long Range Status: • Approved for FY04 new start by the Joint Non-lethal Weapons Directorate (JNLWD). • Projectile deceleration mechanism successfully demonstrated in 20mm and 25mm using crude laboratory airburst mechanisms. • US Patent 6,7,22,283 issued April 20, 2004 • First adjustable burst distance non-lethal projectile using an electronic fuze to be demonstrated in 25mm in September 2004 as part of the Airbursting Non-Lethal Munition program. • Development of an appropriate airbursting fuze or proximity fuze mechanism is the key to success.
