  2. Mathematics Strategy • The Mathematics Strategy is in its third year, and it grows stronger every year. • This presentation will give insight into where we have been and where we plan to go next.

The Time to Learn Strategy The Time to Learn Strategy includes requirements for minimum time for mathematics Primary–9 • A minimum of 45 minutes per day for grades Primary–2. • A minimum of 1 hour per day for grades 3–9. • A minimum of 5 minutes per day for mental math and estimation, grades 1–9.

  5. Professional Development Initiative • The Professional Development initiative will continue in 2004–2005. This year the initiative will • provide support for school-based mathematics leaders • provide time for school-based mathematics leaders to support staff in their schools • provide opportunities for some school-based mathematics leaders to mentor one or more of their colleagues • provide a one-day workshop for grade 3 mathematics teachers to support the implementation of new core resources

Observation from the On-Line Surveys • Principals strongly agreed their participation in the principals/lead teachers workshops was beneficial. • Math leaders appreciated ready made “teacher friendly” materials for sessions. • Classroom teachers agreed the 45 minute school-based sessions were useful and informative. • Sessions on measurement, assessment, and instructional strategies were requested for further PD

  7. Professional Development Initiative • 3850 days: Distributed proportionally among boards. • Category 1: Two days per school-based mathematics leader for his/her own Professional Development. • Category 2a: Two days per school-based mathematics leader to prepare school-based Professional Development sessions. • Category 2b: A pool of days will be available for mentoring. • Category 3: One day per grade 3 teacher.

  8. Professional Development Initiative • Mentors • We will be forming a team of Provincial Facilitators of up to 8 Mathematics Mentors and up to 8 Literacy Mentors. • These 16 Provincial Facilitators will be asked to help shape the mentoring initiative in Nova Scotia. • Our long-range goal is to provide mentor services to all schools, Primary–9.

  9. Mathematics Workshops for Resource Teachers: Grades 7–9 • Spring 2004 • Five regional two-day workshops • 140 junior high school resource teachers • Joint effort of English Program Services and Student Services • Each participant received a resource kit of manipulatives and binders

Mathematics Workshops for Resource Teachers: Grades 7–9 • Sessions • grades 4–9 mathematics curriculum outcomes • five types of mathematics manipulatives • a literature review • an overview of theory re special needs • Differentiation of instruction and other adaptations • Follow-up sessions are being planned

Mathematics Summer InstituteAntigonish (August 11–12, 2004) • 120 participants • 10 sessions • Grades P–2: Assessing Young Children in Mathematics / Mathematics in Multiage Classrooms • Grades 3–4: Adapting Mathematics Activities for a Variety of Learners / What You Say Makes All the Difference

Mathematics Summer InstituteAntigonish (August 11–12, 2004) • Grades 5–6: Common Sense to Number Sense / Doing Mathematics through Problem Solving • Grades 7–9: Integers with Meaning / Geo-block Activity/Geometer’s Sketchpad • Grades 10–12: Casio Graphing Calculator / Working with Column 3: Worthwhile Tasks

  13. Resources A commitment has been made to provide resources to support mathematics teaching and learning.

Outcomes Frameworks to Inform Professional Development • An Outcomes Framework to Inform Professional Development for Mathematics Teachers was completed and distributed in 2003–2004. • An Outcomes Framework to Inform Professional Development for Administrators is in the workshop binder. (Plus the book: Administrator’s Guide: How to Support and Improve Mathematics Education in Your School)
