  9. Horsemanship Skills

  10. Because there is more to horses than riding, we spend a lot of time practicing and progressing our horsemanship skills.

  11. Again, horsemanship skills are taught in accordance with developmental appropriateness and previous experience. All campers practice the very important task of grooming their horses.

  12. Camp Specific Horsemanship Goals • Youngins/Beginners Camps • Groom and tack w/ some help • Lead horse w/ some help • Mount horse without physical assistance • Dismount independently • Untack and cool off horse • Intermediate Camp • Groom and tack independently • Lead independently • Mount and dismount independently • Adjust girth and stirrups • Refine leading skills such as backing, pivoting, and steering through obstacles

  13. Unmounted Activities

  14. When campers are not riding, they are learning about horses, horse care, and different horse activities. These areas are called unmounted activities.

  15. Horse baths are a lot of fun on a warm, summer day!

  16. As Three Gaits develops a therapeutic driving program, campers are able to watch the progress of our driving pony, Nora.

  17. Campers help with daily chores. This includes feeding horses hay, grain, and supplements.

  18. Don’t worry… there’s no homework! But, we do spend time learning about horses. Activities teach campers about horse breeds, colors, markings, and riding disciplines (sports).

  19. Sounds like fun? Well… it is!

  20. Check the Three Gaits website (www.3gaits.org) for information and dates of day camps. There will be opportunities for riders ages 6-13 and counselors If you have specific questions, please contact: Day Camp Coordinator 3gaits@3gaits.org or (608) 877-9086 For more information
