A Time of Transition • The Northern Kingdom of Israel falls in 722 to Sargon II of Assyria • The Assyrian Empire is the first empire to use iron weapons • Developed a network of staging posts to speed communication through empire • Babylon destroys kingdom of Judah in 587 • Jewish people sent into exile, beginning of the Jewish DIASPORA– the dispersion of Jewish people through the world

  3. Persia: A World Empire • Persia challenges Babylon for control of the Middle East • 539 BC: Cyrus II of Persia conquers Babylon • Cyrus’s son Cambyses conquers Egypt • 521 BC Darius I becomes king of Persia

Cyrus the Great • Cyrus II practices religious tolerance of conquered people • Allows the Jewish people to return to their homes • His acceptance of different cultures earns him nickname “The Great” • Allows local people to govern their own affairs • Allows Cyrus to have a stable, strong empire

Darius the Great • Darius I rules from 521-486 BC • Conquers western India and Thrace in Europe creating the largest empire in world history to that point (3 million square miles!) • Divides his empire into 20 Satrapies – provinces ruled by a governor • The Satrapies united by the Royal Road • The road was so effective it was possible to travel 1700 miles in just 7 days!

The Glory of Darius • Each year Darius received 14,560 talents of silver and gold in tribute • Athens entire treasury NEVER had more than 6000 talents • 1 Talent = 6000 Drachmas • 1 Drachma = 1 day’s wage • 1 Drachma = $25.00 • 1 Talent = $150,000 • Darius the Great’s ANNUAL income in tribute = $2,184,000,000
