  1. AFFIXES –Word-Wise Prefixes, Root Words and Suffixes

  2. Why do we study affixes? Learning root words, prefixes and suffixes can help you because: If you recognize these word parts, it is easier to figure out what a word you don’t know means. They can help you to spell words because you’ll remember patterns. You won’t have to fear big words! Read-write-think Like your Mom said, “Smart is not always knowing the answer, but knowing how to figure it out!”

  3. What is word-wise • Word-wise readers know how to figure out a word’s meaning—even if it’s a word they’ve never seen before. • http://movieclips.com/6zHa7-akeelah-and-the-bee-movie-big-words-come-from-little-words/

  4. Your Turn: 1. Create a “nonsense word” using a combination of the affixes learned and be able to define these words: e.g. ‘biocredography”= a believable book about someone’s life; “thermoscope”=a device that lets you see the heat given off by an object. 2. Using the following words to write a paragraph on how to make up a bed… Procrastinate, scribbling, consensus, misappropriating
