  1. Wednesday, March 16 • Don’t turn in your paper yet. • In your notes, write down: • Your paper thesis statement • Your main points in your paper that support your thesis • We will be using this information for an activity in class today

  2. Homework • Submit paper to Turnitin.com tonight by 11:59pm • Turn in hard copy of paper tomorrow (if you didn’t today) • Memorize poem • Work on speech • Journal due on speech day • No vocab quiz on Friday

  3. Goals for Today: • Have a pretty good idea of what kind of visual aid you will use for your speech • Have a rough draft of your speech outline completed – at least a thesis and support points.

  4. Using Visual Aids • Who is your audience? • What is your purpose? • We don’t want to be overwhelmed with words. • Make sure your visual aid has a purpose. It should enhance your message.

  5. Let’s say I’m doing a speech on the Earthquake in Japan • An 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit off the east coast of Japan early today. • The quake -- one of the largest in recorded history -- triggered a 23-foot tsunami that battered Japan's coast killing hundreds and sweeping away cars, homes, buildings, and boats. • "This is the kind of earthquake that hits once every 100 years," said restaurant worker Akira Tanaka.

  6. IMPORTANT • If you need to use my computer for your visual aid you MUST: • Email me your PowerPoint/image/whatever BEFORE YOUR SPEECH • I will download the file and have it ready on my computer. • If you do not email me with enough time, you will not have access to your file for your speech.

  7. Class Assessment • Same thing goes for your assessment – if you need me to make copies, then you must give me advance notice.

  8. Please write down: • 2 or 3 ideas for a visual aid (don’t just write “poster” • Doesn’t have to be complicated • Think “what would help the class best understand my poem/poet?” • Think of some “out-of-the-box” ideas

  9. Your Speech Outline • How should it be different from your paper? • Shorter • Less in-depth • Thesis may be more focused • Less formal diction and tone • Citations • Don’t need to cite unless it adds validity to your source.

  10. Outline • Intro – Memorized poem and attention grabbing opening which introduces the thesis. • Main Point • Support/evidence (you will have more than just 1) • Main Point • Support/evidence • Main Point • Support/evidence • Conclusion - Memorable conclusion which ties together the main points to support the thesis

What are my main points? • What are the most important aspects of your research paper? • Is your poet famous for a certain technique? • Is there a common theme in his/her poetry? • Does you poet typify aspects of the Romantic or Victorian period? • What would your audience find most interesting?

Sample Thesis with Main Points • Like many modern American poets, Frost expresses his dissatisfaction with the war through the symbols of death in “The Bear”. • Symbol of Death #1 - compared to his life/historical context • Symbol of Death #2 - compared to his life/historical context • Symbol of Death #3 - compared to his life/historical context • Robert Frost’s personal life and childhood in rural America influenced the melancholy tone is his poem “The Bear”. • Death of Frost’s Dad and Mom • Frost’s frustration with rural America • Analysis of poem in regards to death of family members and rural America

  13. Take out your paper thesis and main points and write down: • Your speech thesis (may be the same as you paper thesis but it also may be different – more specific and focused) • Your main points • Now pair/share. Make revisions if necessary. • What specific evidence and support will you use to support your main points? • Think about your opening and closing statements.

Homework • Submit paper to Turnitin.com tonight by 11:59pm • Turn in hard copy of paper tomorrow (if you didn’t today) • Work on Memorizing your poem • Work on speech – draft of your outline DUE FRIDAY • Journal due on speech day • Check SharePoint for any updates • Write one aspect of the speech that you are most concerned about on a notecard
