  1. Biomass Combustionin Florida Jeff Koerner Permitting North Bureau of Air Regulation Department of Environmental Protection 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  2. What is biomass? Organic material from plants or animals For this presentation, we’re sticking with … … plants. 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  3. Increasing Popularity Fuel costs Renewable fuel CO2 neutral 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  4. “CO2 Neutral” Can be up to 95% carbon closure even including costs for biomass production, transportation and plant construction. {DOE-NETL} CO2 Cycle 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  5. What’s in Florida now? Currently, primary sources are: Sugar mills Pulp and paper mills Conventional power plants 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  6. Sugar Mills “Bagasse” is fibrous, vegetative residue that remains after milling sugarcane and extracting sugar. Currently, 6 sugar mills in Florida Traditional boilers Process steam Small amounts of electricity Bagasse is: “Free” Renewable Carbon neutral 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  7. Pulp and Paper Mills Combustion units: • Combination boilers • Power boilers • Recovery boilers • Process steam • Moderate amounts of electricity Bark, wood, BLS and RLS: • “Free” • Renewable • Carbon neutral Florida has 5 sulfate process mills and one sulfite process mill. These mills digest wood to make paper and specialty fibers. 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  8. Example (TECO) … preserve our environment for future generations by using renewable energy sources like biomass (plant materials), sunlight and landfill gas to generate electricity. Conventional Power Plants Each 200 kilowatt-hour block subscribed to will offset over 5,600 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2). A “block” of renewable energy equals 200 kilowatt-hours (200kWh) of electricity on the electric grid. And it only costs you $5 per month, conveniently added to your electric bill. Over 1-year period, offsets same CO2 emissions as: 1 block = not driving an average car for 6 months 3 blocks = planting two acres of trees 4 blocks = removing two average cars 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  9. What’s new? 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  10. Biomass Gasification 2007 Annual Air Meeting

  11. E-Grass A perennial member of the grass family, like bamboo or sugar cane. Produces a high yield and can be harvested up to twice annually. • At maturity, > 100,000 stalks per acre of land • Extremely hardy with no natural enemies • Grows in poor soils without fertilizer and little rainfall • Flourishes in warm climates, fast growing • Stalks have natural wax that repels moisture and • protects chips from deteriorating during storage • Used as ornamental throughout southern U.S. • Requires less water due to its deep roots 2007 Annual Air Meeting
