  1. LBJ Multicultural Fair 2nd Six Weeks – Project Choice

  2. LBJ Multicultural Fair Friday,October 20th, 2006 • A group of 3 to 4 students (they do not have to be in the same magnet WH class) • Pick a country to research • Sign up outside Room 266 to represent that country in the Multicultural Fair (a 2 to 3 period “field-trip”event)– the sooner the better.

  3. LBJ Multicultural Fair – Oct. 20thProject Choice • What your project MUST entail:1) comprehensive 3-paneled display board (to include: map of country, world map that indicates where the country is located, important historical events, famous people, past and current government and economic info, etc).

  4. Multicultural Fair – October 20thProject Choice • 2. cultural information displayed on board • 3. participants must be in full or partial costume • 4. some type of food dish must be prepared and small samples will be handed out to guests • 5. either pictures of…or real national/ cultural artifacts will be displayed • 6. national/cultural music should be playing on some type of music player • 7. optional for extra points: students should perform a national/cultural dance

  5. If I want to do this, what is the first step? • Sign up for a country before your preference is taken by another group • Get together with your partners and submit a proposal to Ms. Boothe next Tuesday (Oct. 10th)

  6. Proposal: • Country selected • Partner names and WH periods • Responsibilities (an explanation of all of the texts that need to be done and who will be responsible for each) • Schedule (a calendar that shows when various tasks will be completed by) • A statement (from each) explaining why you decided to do this project and what you hope to learn

  7. Following the Fair • Each student will write an essay (at least 1 1/2 pages in length- typed) explaining the project and what you learned from being a part of it– also, include remarks explaining the reaction you got to your project by the guests visiting the fair (you might do a survey to ask students/parents what they learned and if they enjoyed your project). • This essay will be due 1 week after the fair.

  8. How Much is This Worth? • It is a major grade– worth 100 points in the Tests, projects’ category (66% of your entire grade).

  9. If I don’t do this, will I have to do a project this grading period? • Yes, but I am not ready yet to explain your other choices. • This possibility came up yesterday after an email was sent out to teachers asking them to get students to participate in the fair.

  10. FAQ • Students do not have to be ethnically or culturally associated with the country that you select. You must just have an interest in the country. • Suggestion: It is probably a good idea to select a country that isn’t as “popular” as others.

  11. Country Possibilities • Ireland • Scotland • The Philippines • Australia • New Zealand • The Netherlands • Nigeria • Zimbabwe • Brunei • Caribbean island countries like Grenada, Haiti, the Dominican Republic

  12. Country Possibilities • Mongolia • Nepal • Tibet (actually part of China) • Any of the former Soviet republics • Jamaica • Egypt • Poland • Iran • Palestine (not really a country at the moment) • Brazil

  13. Country Possibilities • Korea • Mali (Africa) • Sri Lanka • Thailand • Liberia (Africa – founded by U.S. citizens) • Algeria (N. Africa) • Indonesia • Malaysia • Cuba

  14. Countries that inevitably will have the most number of students vying for them • Japan • Mexico • India • Pakistan (probably not too many) • China and/or Taiwan • Israel • Spain • France (not usually too many)

  15. Field Trip • Students who elect to do this must be available to miss two or three of your after lunch classes (I am assuming that the fair will take place after lunch on the 22nd– I will find out for sure and let you know tomorrow).
