  2. Early Political Career • Move to D.C. 1931 to become aid to Congressman Richard Klegman • 1935 Became director of the National Youth Organization • Elected 1937 to Congress • Volunteered to serve in WWII and was a Navy Lt. Commander

  3. Rise to President • Elected to Senate 1948 • Was youngest to ever serve as minority leader of the Senate • Became Majority Leader 1955 • Asked to be Kennedy’s Veep to attract conservative southern Democratic Vote • Upon Kennedys Death was sworn in as President

  4. Johnson Years • Declared “War on Poverty” • Johnsons “Great Society” • Created Medicare and Medicaid • Civil Rights Act of 1964 • Voting Rights Act of 1965

Escalation of Vietnam • Determined to prevent North Vietnamese Communists from taking over the U.S.-supported government of South Vietnam • 16,000 troops in 1963 to 500,000 by 1968 • Protests began to appear all over the country • Due to lose of support in his own party decided not to seek re election
