Causes of the Spanish American War • Many Americans supported the cause of Cuban liberation • Newspapers promoted anti-Spanish feelings • Yellow Journalism: a style of newspaper-writing that exaggerates the news to lure and enrage readers • Newspaper owners William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer competed with each other to gain readers by publishing sensational stories • Focused on Spanish atrocities and the war for independence being fought by the Cubans • The U.S.S. Maine blows up in the harbor of Havana, Cuba • The Maine was sent to bring American citizens out of Cuba • The explosion was probably caused by an accident, but the Spanish were blamed
