  10. Golden Age • During the Tang & Song Dynasties, China experienced a period of prosperity and growth • China’s population doubled • A great many inventions came about • Moveable type • Gunpowder • Porcelain • Magnetic compass • Mechanical clock for sailing • Paper money

Golden Age • Agriculture • China imported a faster ripening form of rice • Trade • Tang rulers had control of the Silk Roads until their decline • Therefore, during the Song period, Chinese traders began to improve their sailing abilities & became the greatest sea power in the world. • Buddhism spread to Korea & Vietnam through trade • New ideas in Math and Astronomy spread to China through trade, including tea drinking!

Golden Age • Society • Scholar-officials became a new upper class of society called gentry, as aristocracy began to decline • An urban middle class emerged of merchants, shopkeepers, artisans, & minor officials • The lowest urban class was made up of servants, soldiers & laborers • In the countryside, peasants still labored in the fields for the wealthy landowners
