  17. A Fact To Be Noted on the Speaking in Tongues • There are 8 writers of the N.T. • There are 27 books – of which 21 are written to individuals, churches or groups. • Paul wrote 13 or 14 books of which 1 Corinthians is the only discussion of “Speaking in tongues”. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

A Fact To Be Noted on the Speaking in Tongues • John who wrote 5 books of the N.T. and Peter who was the spokesman on Pentecost wrote nothing of this subject. • Is it not a strange omission from the N.T. text if “the gift of speaking in tongues” was an essential part of the Christians experience and to be perpetuated to all Christians forever more?   19. The guidelines given are these: • Tongues is a sign to unbelievers. It's a sign that God is speaking. It's a sign to unbelievers. • If used in the Church it must always be translated, so that it can have the purpose of edifying the believers who don't know what's being said. • Never are more than three people to do it, and they are to do it in sequence, not at the same time. The guidelines given are these: • There is to be no speaking in tongues unless it is interpreted. • Any confusion or any disorder in the assembly is an indication that what is going on did not originate with God--it's a counterfeit; it's a prostitution. • Women are never to do it in the assemblies, for they are to remain silent and not to speak in tongues.   21. Tongues of Today • "The reason some of you don't speak fluently, is that you try to think of the sounds. So when we pray this prayer and you start speaking in your heavenly language--don't try to think!“ • Later he adds, "You don't even have to think in order to pray in the Spirit!" • Charles and Francis Hunter, who travel all across the world in healing explosion meetings, have as a part of their curriculum the seminars in which they teach people how to speak in tongues.   22. Tongues of Today • Charles Hunter tells people, and I quote, • “When you pray with your spirit you do not think of the sounds of the language. Just trust God, but make the sounds when I tell you to. In just a moment, when I tell you, begin loving and praising God by speaking forth a lot of different syllable sounds. At first make the sounds rapidly so you won't try to think as you do in speaking your natural language.   23. The Apostolic Office • Important to the debate at hand is the apostolic office. • The question of whether there are apostles in the church today is pivotal to the discussion, because if signs and wonders are closely tied to that office, and that office is still in the church today, then we would expect that the signs and wonders are still to be used today. • However, if the office has ceased, then we have reason to explore whether or not some of the other gifts have also ceased. The Apostolic Office • Must have been an eyewitness of the resurrected Christ. • Acts 1.21-22 says: - “So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us–one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  25. The Apostolic Office • The apostles were to perform signs and wonders, which confirmed his message and office. • Matt. 10:1–2; Acts 2:43; 4:33; 5:12; 2 Cor. 12:12-13; and Heb. 2:3–4 Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  26. The Apostolic Office • An Apostle must be called by Christ to the office. • Mark 3.13-4: - “And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him.   27. Conclusions reached based on these qualifications • Based on these qualifications, the biblical testimony seems to be that the office of apostle has indeed ceased. If this gift has ceased, than others may have ceased as well. • Ephesians 2.20Along with the evidence of the qualifications, there is a specific verse that seems to show that the gifts of apostle and prophet were temporary. • That verse is Ephesians 2.19-21: • “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

Conclusions reached based on these qualifications • This verse points to the foundational quality of the apostles and prophets, upon which the Church was being built. • Once a foundation is built, we no longer continue to build the foundation, but build upon that foundation. • The foundation laid by the apostles and prophets was their teachings, of which Christ is the cornerstone (v. 21). • Once these teachings were confirmed, authenticated, and preserved (through scripture), the foundation was laid and the foundational gifts were no longer necessary.   30. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • John Chrysostom - (c. 344–407) ---- Homilies on 1 Corinthians, 36.7 • “This whole place [speaking about 1 Corinthians 12 emp. JC] is very obscure: but the obscurity is produced by our ignorance of the facts referred to and by their cessation, being such as then used to occur but now no longer take place.” • Augustine – (354–430) --- Homilies on the First Epistle of John, 6.10 • “In the earliest times, “the Holy Ghost fell upon them that believed: and they spake with tongues,” which they had not learned, “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” These were signs adapted to the time. For there behooved to be that betokening of the Holy Spirit in all tongues, to shew that the Gospel of God was to run through all tongues over the whole earth. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • Theodoret of Cyrus - (c. 393–c. 466) --- Commentary on the First Epistle to the Corinthians, 240, 43. • “In former times those who accepted the divine preaching and who were baptized for their salvation were given visible signs of the grace of the Holy Spirit at work in them. Some spoke in tongues which they did not know and which nobody had taught them, while others performed miracles or prophesied. The Corinthians also did these things, but they did not use the gifts as they should have done. They were more interested in showing off than in using them for the edification of the church. . . .
