  1. “THE SCRIPTURES TEACH THAT SPEAKING IN TONGUES, MIRACLES AND MIRACULOUS KNOWLEDGE HAVE CEASED TODAY.” Affirm ---- John Cripps Deny ---- Richard Pope Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  2. Defining the Proposition • “The Scriptures” • The INSPIRED WORD OF GOD, THE BIBLE, its 66 BOOKS, ESPECIALLY THE 27 BOOKS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT. • 2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17 Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  3. Defining the Proposition • “TEACH” • “Education encompassesteaching and learning specific skills, and also something less tangible but more profound: the imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well-developed wisdom.” • To Impart Information • To Instruct • To Educate • Ephesians 3:3-4 Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  4. Defining the Proposition • “SPEAKING IN TONGUES” • The Bible defines speaking in tongues. • Acts 2:6-11 • We must conclude that when the Bible speaks about speaking in tongues it is making reference to languages not ecstatic utterances. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  5. Defining the Proposition • “MIRACLES” • “A miracle, derived from the old Latin word miraculum meaning "something wonderful", is a striking interposition of divine intervention by a supernatural being in the universe by which the ordinary course and operation of Nature is overruled, suspended, or modified.” • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  6. Defining the Proposition • “*MIRACULOUS KNOWLEDGE” – *See Miracles • “Knowledge acquisition involves complex cognitive processes: perception, learning, communication, association and reasoning. The term knowledge is also used to mean the confident understanding of a subject with the ability to use it for a specific purpose if appropriate.” • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knowledge Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  7. Defining the Proposition • “HAVE CEASED” • “Cease and desist (also called C & D) is a legal term which essentially means "to halt" or "to end" an action ("cease") and to refrain from doing it again in the future ("desist"). The recipient of the cease-and-desist may be an individual or an organization.” • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cease_and_desist Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  8. Defining the Proposition • “TODAY” • “Today refers to the currentday. Western society considers it as the period of time between the previous midnight and the forthcoming midnight, although some informally refer to "today" as the period between their awakening and falling asleep, even if the period spans midnight.” • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Today Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  9. THE ISSUE IS NOT…. • Whether we should pray for the sick, or that miracles existed in the 1st century, but whether miraculous healings etc, speaking in tongues and miraculous knowledge can be had today in this present age. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  10. Hebrews 13:8 • “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  11. Three Facts To Note About Speaking in Tongues • First, the New Testament gift of tongues consisted of languages of men which were spoken miraculously, without previous knowledge of the language. • Second, these tongues were given as signs to confirm that both the man who spoke and the message he spoke were from God. • Third, only those who received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and those who received the laying on of the apostles' hands possessed this miraculous gift. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  12. Only Five References in N.T. • Acts 2:4,6,11 • 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. • 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. • 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  13. Only Five References in N.T. • Acts 10:46 • 46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  14. Only Five References in N.T. • Acts 19:6 • 6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  15. Only Five References in N.T. • 1 Corinthians 12:1-10,30 • Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren,…... 4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. ….. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: • 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? - The KJV,(Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  16. Only Five References in N.T. • 1 Corinthians 14:2,26-32 • 2 For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. 26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying. 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. 28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. 29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. The KJV(Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  17. A Fact To Be Noted on the Speaking in Tongues • There are 8 writers of the N.T. • There are 27 books – of which 21 are written to individuals, churches or groups. • Paul wrote 13 or 14 books of which 1 Corinthians is the only discussion of “Speaking in tongues”. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  18. A Fact To Be Noted on the Speaking in Tongues • John who wrote 5 books of the N.T. and Peter who was the spokesman on Pentecost wrote nothing of this subject. • Is it not a strange omission from the N.T. text if “the gift of speaking in tongues” was an essential part of the Christians experience and to be perpetuated to all Christians forever more? Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  19. The guidelines given are these: • Tongues is a sign to unbelievers. It's a sign that God is speaking. It's a sign to unbelievers. • If used in the Church it must always be translated, so that it can have the purpose of edifying the believers who don't know what's being said. • Never are more than three people to do it, and they are to do it in sequence, not at the same time. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  20. The guidelines given are these: • There is to be no speaking in tongues unless it is interpreted. • Any confusion or any disorder in the assembly is an indication that what is going on did not originate with God--it's a counterfeit; it's a prostitution. • Women are never to do it in the assemblies, for they are to remain silent and not to speak in tongues. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  21. Tongues of Today • "The reason some of you don't speak fluently, is that you try to think of the sounds. So when we pray this prayer and you start speaking in your heavenly language--don't try to think!“ • Later he adds, "You don't even have to think in order to pray in the Spirit!" • Charles and Francis Hunter, who travel all across the world in healing explosion meetings, have as a part of their curriculum the seminars in which they teach people how to speak in tongues. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  22. Tongues of Today • Charles Hunter tells people, and I quote, • “When you pray with your spirit you do not think of the sounds of the language. Just trust God, but make the sounds when I tell you to. In just a moment, when I tell you, begin loving and praising God by speaking forth a lot of different syllable sounds. At first make the sounds rapidly so you won't try to think as you do in speaking your natural language. Make the sounds loudly at first so you can easily hear what you are saying.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  23. The Apostolic Office • Important to the debate at hand is the apostolic office. • The question of whether there are apostles in the church today is pivotal to the discussion, because if signs and wonders are closely tied to that office, and that office is still in the church today, then we would expect that the signs and wonders are still to be used today. • However, if the office has ceased, then we have reason to explore whether or not some of the other gifts have also ceased. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  24. The Apostolic Office • Must have been an eyewitness of the resurrected Christ. • Acts 1.21-22 says: - “So one of the men who have accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us–one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  25. The Apostolic Office • The apostles were to perform signs and wonders, which confirmed his message and office. • Matt. 10:1–2; Acts 2:43; 4:33; 5:12; 2 Cor. 12:12-13; and Heb. 2:3–4 Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  26. The Apostolic Office • An Apostle must be called by Christ to the office. • Mark 3.13-4: - “And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so that they might be with him and he might send them out to preach” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  27. Conclusions reached based on these qualifications • Based on these qualifications, the biblical testimony seems to be that the office of apostle has indeed ceased. If this gift has ceased, than others may have ceased as well. • Ephesians 2.20Along with the evidence of the qualifications, there is a specific verse that seems to show that the gifts of apostle and prophet were temporary. • That verse is Ephesians 2.19-21: • “So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  28. Conclusions reached based on these qualifications • This verse points to the foundational quality of the apostles and prophets, upon which the Church was being built. • Once a foundation is built, we no longer continue to build the foundation, but build upon that foundation. • The foundation laid by the apostles and prophets was their teachings, of which Christ is the cornerstone (v. 21). • Once these teachings were confirmed, authenticated, and preserved (through scripture), the foundation was laid and the foundational gifts were no longer necessary. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  29. Question? • Were the Apostles guided into ALL TRUTH? • John 16:8-13 – “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me; Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.” - KJV (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  30. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • John Chrysostom - (c. 344–407) ---- Homilies on 1 Corinthians, 36.7 • “This whole place [speaking about 1 Corinthians 12 emp. JC] is very obscure: but the obscurity is produced by our ignorance of the facts referred to and by their cessation, being such as then used to occur but now no longer take place.” • Augustine – (354–430) --- Homilies on the First Epistle of John, 6.10 • “In the earliest times, “the Holy Ghost fell upon them that believed: and they spake with tongues,” which they had not learned, “as the Spirit gave them utterance.” These were signs adapted to the time. For there behooved to be that betokening of the Holy Spirit in all tongues, to shew that the Gospel of God was to run through all tongues over the whole earth. That thing was done for a betokening, and it passed away.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  31. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • Theodoret of Cyrus - (c. 393–c. 466) --- Commentary on the First Epistle to the Corinthians, 240, 43. • “In former times those who accepted the divine preaching and who were baptized for their salvation were given visible signs of the grace of the Holy Spirit at work in them. Some spoke in tongues which they did not know and which nobody had taught them, while others performed miracles or prophesied. The Corinthians also did these things, but they did not use the gifts as they should have done. They were more interested in showing off than in using them for the edification of the church. . . . Even in our time grace is given to those who are deemed worthy of holy baptism, but it may not take the same form as it did in those days.” • John Calvin - (1509–1564) --- Commentary on the Synoptic Gospels III, 389 • “Though Christ does not expressly state whether he intends this gift [of miracles] to be temporary, or to remain perpetually in the Church, yet it is more probable that miracles were promised only for a time, in order to give lustre to the gospel while it was new or in a state of obscurity.” • Institutes of the Christian Religion, IV:19, 18 • “…the gift of healing, like the rest of the miracles, which the Lord willed to be brought forth for a time, has vanished away in order to make the preaching of the Gospel marvelous for ever.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  32. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • John Owen - (1616–1683) --- Works IV, 518 • “Gifts which in their own nature exceed the whole power of all our faculties, that dispensation of the Spirit is long since ceased and where it is now pretended unto by any, it may justly be suspected as an enthusiastic delusion.” • Thomas Watson - (c 1620–1686) --- The Beatitudes, 140 • “Sure, there is as much need of ordination now as in Christ’s time and in the time of the apostles, there being then extraordinary gifts in the church which are now ceased.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  33. External Evidence For the Cessation of Tongues • Matthew Henry - (1662–1714) --- Preface to Vol. IV of his Exposition of OT & NT, vii • “These and other gifts of prophecy, being a sign, have long since ceased and been laid aside, and we have no encouragement to expect the revival of them; but, on the contrary, are directed to call the scriptures the more sure word of prophecy, more sure than voices from heaven; and to them we are directed to take heed, to search them, and to hold them fast, 2 Peter 1:29.” • Augustine: - (354–430) --- Retractions I xiii 7 • “For those that are baptized do not now receive the Spirit on the imposition of hands, so as to speak in the tongues of all the peoples; neither are the sick healed by the shadow of the preachers of Christ falling on them as they pass; and other such things as were then done, are now manifestly ceased.” Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  35. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • MIRACLES were the CREDENTIALS of JESUS and the APOSTLES. • Mark 2:1-12 • Vrs 5 - “When Jesus saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.” • Vrs 10 – “But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (he saith to the sick of the palsy,)” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  36. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • MIRACLES were the CREDENTIALS of JESUS and the APOSTLES. • John 3:1-16 • Vrs 1-2 – “There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  37. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • MIRACLES were the CREDENTIALS of JESUS and the APOSTLES. • Hebrews 2:3-4 • Vrs 2-3 – “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  38. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • MIRACLES were the CREDENTIALS of JESUS and the APOSTLES. • Acts 2:22 • Vrs 22 – “Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  39. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • According to these passages the purpose of Miracles was to confirm the message of God and never was to accommodate the ones on whom the miracles were performed. • Mark 16:20 • Vrs 20 – “And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  40. 2 Timothy 4:20 • “Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  41. 1 Timothy 5:23 • “Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  42. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MIRACLES ACCORDING TO THE SCRIPTURES. • Miracles were never USED to accommodate the ones on whom the miracles were performed. • FROM THE ABOVE TWO SCRIPTURES TWO QUESTIONS. • WHY DID PAUL LEAVE TROPHIMUS IN MILETUM SICK? • WHY DID PAUL NOT HEAL TIMOTHY? • DID PAUL NOT HAVE THE POWER TO DO SO? • THE REASON IS THE WORD WAS ALREADY CONFIRMED IN BOTH. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  43. WHAT MR POPE MUST DENY TONIGHT IS THAT THE WORD OF GOD HAS BEEN CONFIRMED – AND THEREFORE THE NEED FOR SPEAKING IN TONGUES, MIRACLES AND MIRACULOUS KNOWLEDGE STILL EXISTS TODAY. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  44. 1 Corinthians 12:1 • Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  45. SPIRITUAL GIFTS IS THE SUBJECT OF I CORINTHIANS CHAPTERS 12-14 • 1 Cor 12:5-11 • “Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. • And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. • And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. • But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. • # 1 - For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; • # 2 - to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; • # 3 - To another faith by the same Spirit; • # 4 - to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; • # 5 - To another the working of miracles; • # 6 - to another prophecy; • # 7 - to another discerning of spirits; • # 8 - to another divers kinds of tongues; • # 9 - to another the interpretation of tongues: • But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  46. 1 CORTHIANS 13:8-10 • “… : but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part……” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  47. I CORINTHIANS 13:10 • “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769 Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  48. WHAT IS THAT “PERFECT THING” THAT WOULD COME? • Mr Pope and others will affirm that this is the SECOND COMING OF CHRIST and that is why the TONGUES, MIRACLES, PROPHECY and MIRACULOUS KNOWLEDGE continue today. 2nd C O M I N G THESE WILL CONTINUE TO BE PRESENT AFTER THE 2nd COMING of CHRIST THESE ABIDE TODAY: • PROPHECY • SPEAKING IN TONGUES • KNOWLEDGE – (MIRACULOUS) • and vrs 13 • FAITH • HOPE • LOVE • FAITH • HOPE • LOVE Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  49. 1 Corinthians 13:8-13 • Vrs 8 - “… but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.” • Vrs 10 – “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” • Vrs 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. • The King James Version, (Cambridge: Cambridge) 1769. Cripps/Pope Debate Slide #

  50. Note the Order in 1 Cor.13:8-13 • Prophecy, Tongues and Knowledge will all cease/fail and vanish away. • WHEN? • Vrs 10 – “But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.” • What remains or ABIDES after the perfect has come is: • Vrs 13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
