Are Tongues Available for All Believers • There is more to being filled with the Holy Spirit than speaking in tongues; but speaking in tongues is the initial evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit • Discussion question: • Does the scripture in 1Cor. 12:30 which says, “…do all speak with tongues? ….” prove that speaking in tongues is not necessary for all believers?

Are Tongues Available for All Believers • Read the entire chapter of 1Cor. 12 • Key verses 27-30 • “Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. 28 And God has placed in the church first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, of helping, of guidance, and of different kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?” • Discussion question • After reading this passage is Paul talking about a ministry gift or a spiritual gift?

Are Tongues Available for All Believers • In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul is talking about ministry gifts, or fivefold ministry offices, not gifts of the Spirit. • In this passage, Paul is not talking about being filled with Holy Spirit and speaking with tongues in their private devotional prayer lives. • All believers are encouraged to speak in tongues to themselves and to God (1Cor. 14:2, 4).

The Value of Speaking in Tongues • Tongues can be used for devotional purposes (1Cor. 14:2) • Tongues can be used so that Holy Spirit can reveal divine secrets to the believer (1Cor. 14:2) • Tongues can be used to build up the believer. • 1Cor. 14: 4, Paul stated that “He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself…” • Edify means build up or charge • Praying in tongues is for spiritual edification not physical or mental edification • Tongues and interpretation of tongues aren’t just for the benefit of the believer. Tongues an also minister to unbelievers (1Cor. 14:22). • Tongues is a supernatural way to magnify God (Acts 10:46)
