  1. Lumiere Brothers Among the earliest filmmakers The Lumières held their first private screening of projected motion pictures on March 22, 1895. Their first public screening of movies at which admission was charged was held on December 28, 1895.

  2. “A Trip to the Moon” • A French film from 1902 • Possibly the first depiction of space travel in film • Considered by many to be the first science fiction film. • Written and directed by Georges Méliès.

  3. Actualities • What we now refer to as documentary films were known as “actualities” when film first began.

  4. “The Great Train Robbery” • 1903 Western by Edwin S. Porter • Early use of innovative techniques such as cross-cutting, double-exposures, camera movement, and on-location shooting. • One of the earliest examples of narrative film.

  5. Slapstick Comedy • Slapstick is a type of comedy involving exaggerated physical violence or activities. • “The Policeman’s Little Run” from 1907 is one of the earliest examples of slapstick comedy.

  6. “Troubles of a Grass Widower” • By Max Linder • An influence on Charlie Chaplin • Early version of situational comedy.

  7. Winsor McCay… • Also known as “Little Nemo in Slumberland” • Windsor McCay was a cartoonist for the N.Y. Herald • Little Nemo was a popular cartoon character. • Winsor McCay worked four years, made four-thousand drawings, and hand-colored the 35mm frames.
