  4. Nubia • A region of Africa that covers parts of Egypt and Sudan

  5. Kush • A powerful ancient kingdom of Nubia

  6. Piankhi • A Kushite king who conquered Egypt

  7. Meroe • The capital of Kush starting about 590 B.C. and a center of trade

  8. Smelting • The process of heating mineral-bearing material to separate the elements

  9. Subcontinent A large landmass similar to, but smaller than, a continent. This region usually separates itself from the rest of a continent by a mountain range.
