Most ID card printers use one of the two types of printing technologies – dye sublimation or reverse transfer printing. Dye-sublimation printing uses a heated print head to print the required design directly on a card’s surface using the printer ribbon. Also known as direct to card printing, this method offers fast print speeds, making it ideal for organisations that need to print large volumes of ID card quickly and efficiently. In reverse transfer printers, the design is first applied onto a clear film which is then applied to the surface of the ID card.
