  2. GET THE BASICS CLEAR The purpose of an ID card printer is typically the same as any other kind of printer. The main difference is that these printers use plastic rather than paper or other materials and are designed to handle functions like lamination in addition to printing. The standard card is 85.60 × 53.98 mm and most printers are able to print only one card at a time. Most ID card printers use one of the two types of printing technologies – dye sublimation or reverse transfer printing. Dye-sublimation printing uses a heated print head to print the required design directly on a card’s surface using the printer ribbon. Also known as direct to card printing, this method offers fast print speeds, making it ideal for organisations that need to print large volumes of ID card quickly and efficiently. In reverse transfer printers, the design is first applied onto a clear film which is then applied to the surface of the ID card. This method is better suited to cards with uneven surfaces like technology cards and offer added durability and quality.
