  1. Meet the Teacher Night: Sept. 13, 2011 Grade 1-Mme Gareau

  2. A-Welcome ! • B-Philosophy: • In grade 1, we’ll be building on the basic vocabulary that was introduced in Kindergarten, with emphasis on reading and writing. • In our classroom we will be using pictures, actions and role playing to help students understand new concepts. • Our goal is to immerse students in the language rather than translate individual words.

  3. C-Classroom Management: • I strongly believe in positive re-inforcement for behaviour and participation. Ex: sticker rewards, stamps and fishing trips. • To help stay on task, each student is given three warnings (Stop, Think, Go) using the traffic light. • If a students reaches the “red light”, he or she is then asked to sit at the quiet table (usually for about 5 minutes) until they are ready to join the group again. • D-Parent Volunteers: • Thank you to those who have already volunteered to help with library on Fridays@ 2:15 . Please see the schedule to sign-up for weeks which work best for you. Mme Altman will be offering training for all library parents.

  4. E-Class rules: • Je regarde. • (I watch) 2. J’ écoute. (I listen) 3. Je ne parle pas. (I do not speakwhenothers are speaking) 4. Je contrôle mes mains et mes pieds. (I control my hands and my feet) 5. Je suis la règle d’ OR (I follow the golden rule)

  5. F- Areas of Study (Year-at-a-glance) • Math: “Math Makes Sense” • Creating and recognizing patterns • Numbers from 0-20 • Addition and subtraction to 12 • Measurement • Numbers from 0-100 • Geometry • Addition and subtraction to 20 • Science/Phys. Ed: • Mme Maria Sander will be teaching Sciences and a portion of the Phys Ed program. • Social Studies and Health: • Most units will be taught orally. I want students to develop an interest and know the basic facts, but also expand their french vocabulary. • *As part of Health, we also have a social skills program called Second Step and a4-month family life program called Fully Alive which will be taught from Sept-Dec. • Arts Ed: • The four strands of visual arts, dramatic arts, dance and music will be taught • through the use of themes, centres, plays, songs and rhymes.

  6. French Language Arts: • La Roue: The primary homework you will have during the first part of the year will be reading pages in the “La Roue” textbook. Please check your child’s red “DEVOIRS” duotang daily. Be sure to sign and return the homework agenda every day. The parent signature section may also be used for communication. For pronunciation assistance, visit my blog: Blog: http://blog.scs.sk.ca/gareau. After Christmas, we will be doing la dictée and guided reading . More information will be coming home closer to that time. • Printing: D’Nealian script is the method we’ll be learning. Please be sure to ask your child which letters we are working on each week. (Refer to hand-out for the letter formation, order and groupings in which the letters are taught) • Computers: • Students will be using the computers in class (during centre time) and going to the computer lab to take advantage of some of the learning activities available through the GSCS website. • Religion: • Every day in Grade 1, they discover God the Father, Jesus, the Son and The Holy Spirit as we follow the “We Belong to God” program and share our faith together as a school during various liturgical celebrations. • Theme study: • As you will note on the Year-at-a-glance, each month will have 1 or 2 central themes, usually around the seasons and major holidays. We also plan activities and excursions to give meaning to a lot of the subject matter.

  7. Homework note: • Each day, please be sure to check and sign the “Devoirs” page in your child’s red duotang. It should come to and from school every day in the plastic envelope you got the first day. The parent signature section may also be used for communication. For La Roue pronunciation assistance, visit my blog: Blog: http://blog.scs.sk.ca/gareau. After Christmas, we will be doing la dictée and at-home reading . More information will be coming home closer to that time. • Children will be given ample time in class to finish their assignments with time being set aside on Fridays for catching up on the week’s assignments. I do not anticipate needing to send daily homework assignments other than reading, weekly dictée words or the occasional Religion page. I do not generally believe in taking recess or lunch time, so I have set aside time each Friday for catch-up. However, if your child misses excessive amounts of school, alternate arrangements may need to be made. • If we have finished a booklet or assignment and I am sending it home to stay, there will be a sticker or stamp on the top corner. If there is no sticker, it needs to be signed and returned to the school. Most work will be kept in students’ Portfolios and shared at interviews. • Please do not hesitate to contact me at the school (659-7430 or e-mail :tgareau@gscs.sk.ca)if you have any concerns or are just curious about our activities. I’m looking forward to hearing from you! • God Bless! • Mme Gareau Merci !
